Away from the top, the fight at the lower end of the table was an enticing one with teams angling for European spots also doing all they could to stay on course. We take a look at the major talking points of the round.

PSG held by Nantes but maintain top spot

After being beaten by Bayern Munich in their midweek Champions League tie, PSG sorry outing continued over the weekend when they were held by less-fancied Nantes.

Achraf Hakimi gave PSG a dream start, scoring in the second minute on a cold evening at the Parc des Princes. However, Nantes equalised before half-time through Matthis Abline, who finished clinically past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, PSG was unable to reclaim the lead.

With the results, Luis Enrique’s side remains unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season and sits seven points clear at the top after Marseille beat Monaco on Sunday. Meanwhile, Nantes secured a valuable point in its battle against relegation, though it is now 10 matches without a win.

Sampaoli off the mark for Rennes as Kalimuendo scores hattrick

Jorge Sampaoli celebrated his first win as Rennes manager with a 5-0 victory over 10-man Saint-Étienne. Arnaud Kalimuendo starred with a hat-trick, including two penalties, lifting Rennes into mid-table. Rennes had failed to score in more than a month and lost its three previous matches. The result lifted the host one point above Saint-Etienne.

Visiting Saint-Etienne made things difficult for itself when Mathieu Cafaro, who hit the post earlier, was sent off for a handball in the box in the 37th minute. Kalimuendo put Rennes in the driving seat from the penalty spot two minutes later, and they returned to the locker room with a two-goal lead after Ludovic Blas, who was excellent throughout, found the net in added time. Kalimuendo added another goal with a nice finish and converted a second penalty to seal his first Ligue 1 hat trick. Amine Gouiri also scored.

Greenwood penalty helps Marseille to second spot

Olympique Marseille dislodged Monaco from the second spot following a 2-1 win over their opponents on Sunday.

Greenwood placed the ball into the bottom left corner in the 89th minute for his ninth league goal of the season — level with Lille’s Jonathan David and one behind Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola in the scoring charts.

Despite the win, Marseille have the same points as Monaco but are above their Sunday opponents on goal difference with both sides now seven points behind leader PSG.
