Bundesliga 2023/24

Week 6 Review

Bayern rout Bochum 7-0 to go top on goal difference from impressive Bayer Leverkusen

Bayern Munich were at their devastating best as they crushed Bochum 7-0 with England captain Harry Kane getting his first hattrick for his new team. The champions, seeking to extend their record to a 12th consecutive league title went ahead on two minutes when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave them the lead. They were already up 4-0 at halftime thanks to further strikes by Kane, Matthijs de Ligt and Leroy Sane. The Englishman’s third goal came just two minutes from time when Noussair Mazraoui’s low cross was turned in to complete the treble. Elsewhere Bayer Leverkusen continued their excellent start to the season when they won 4-1 against Heidenheim to keep the pressure on Bayern. Last season’s runners up Borussia Dortmund had a hard fought 1-0 win over Wolfsburg to remain just two points behind the leaders.

Timo Werner was the star for RB Leipzig as he came off the bench to score the winner in their 1-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. The Red Bull team have now won four matches on the trot after their opening day defeat, to sit just a point behind the leaders. Arguably the team of the season has been Stuttgart who came from a goal down to win 3-1 against Darmstadt. They had to thank their talisman Serhou Guirassy who scored twice as he guided his team to a highly unlikely third place. It is scarcely believable that this is the same team that staved off relegation by the skin of their teeth last season.

Titanic battle for top four places

It is just five matches in the season but the battle for European places looks to be more intense than ever before. There gap between the sixth placed Dortmund and the leaders is just two points. Just one poor result from the top two teams could potentially see them drop out of the top four if other results go against them. Each week we expect to see the Stuttgart bubble burst but they continue with their incredible start to the season. Wolfsburg suffered their second loss in three matches to drop to 7th spot on the log. They started the season with consecutive wins but the wheels seem to have fallen off since then.

Darmstadt surrender lead for second consecutive match to remain winless

It has been a difficult start for newly promoted Darmstadt in top flight football and it won’t get any easier if they continue giving up leads. A week on after letting a 3-0 slip against Monchengladbach, they gave up a 1-0 lead against Stuttgart to lose the match 3-1. Fellow strugglers Bochum were hammered 7-0 by Bayern to remain one of five teams without a win this season. Monchengladbach, FC Koln and Mainz are the other teams yet to break their win drought. It is no surprise to see all these teams battling in the relegation zone. The points gap between 18th placed Mainz and 13th placed Heidenheim is just three points which means a win for the bottom clubs could see them climb out of the relegation zone.

Golden Boot Outright Winner for 2023/24 season

Harry Kane came storming back into contention for the Golden Boot award with his first ever hattrick in the Bundesliga. Despite his heroics he is still three goals behind Guinean Serhou Guirassy. The Stuttgart striker scored twice in his side’s comeback win over Darmstadt to take his tally to ten.He has now reached double figures in just five games, averaging an incredible two goals per match. Guirassy’s stats are even more impressive when you consider that he has scored ten of his team’s total 17 goals this season.
