Week 22 Review
Bayern in shock defeat to Bochum as Leverkusen pull 8 points clear
Bayern Munich slumped to their third consecutive in eight days as Bochum pulled off one of the upsets of the season in their 3-2 win. The result is all the more amazing as the home side have conceded 17 goals in the last three head to heads with the champions and have failed to score in those matches. This match looked to be heading in the same direction when Jamal Musiala gave the visitors the lead in the 14th minute. To Bochum’ credit they continued to attack and were rewarded in the 38th minute when Takuma Asano equalised for the hosts. It got even better for the home team when they took the lead just before the break.
Things got worse for Bayern when Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a second yellow after his foul in the box. Bochum scored from the resulting penalty to make it 3-1. The ten man visitors did manage a second goal through Harry Kane but it was too little too late. The result now means that Bayern are eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen after they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win over Heidenheim. Xabi Alonso’s men can start dreaming of their first ever Bundesliga title as the race for top honours lies firmly in their court. They showed little nerves in their match as they took the lead just before the halftime break. The leaders then doubled their score in the 81th minute but the hosts did pull one goal back in the 87th minute. Leverkusen then held on for the win and now have their biggest ever lead of eight points over Bayern.
Stuttgart in pound seat in top four race
Stuttgart continued their fairytale season as they pulled five points clear of fourth placed Dortmund. It is amazing to believe that this team only survived relegation last season by winning a relegation/promotion playoff match. Stuttgart now find themselves just four points behind the champions Bayern. They had an excellent 2-1 away win over bottom placed Darmstadt while Dortmund could only muster a 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg. The other team in contention for a Champions League spot, Leipzig secured a 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach to move them within a point of fourth place. It seems all the more likely that the fourth place race will go down to the wire this season.
