The Premier League’s Monday night offering is a West London rivalry as Fulham hosts Chelsea at Craven Cottage. Both teams are struggling in the bottom half of the standings.
Midweek third-round EFL Cup matches saw both clubs win by a single goal, with the Cottagers defeating Norwich City 2-1 and the Blues defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0.
Fulham vs Chelsea
Fulham changed during the past few years to become a mid-table team. They have eight points after six games, which is a strong start to the 2023–24 season. In their last three games, Fulham haven’t suffered a defeat. They defeated Norwich 2-1 at home in the EFL Cup game before that.
Throughout the game, both teams generated a ton of solid opportunities, but Marco Silva’s team ultimately emerged victorious. Following another successful outcome, Fulham will eagerly anticipate Monday night’s match against an underwhelming Chelsea.
Chelsea supporters likely believed that the upcoming season had no potential of being worse than the previous one. Even still, the season’s early going suggests that it might be even more concerning. Chelsea is once again underperforming after having spent more than 460 million euros on transfers throughout the summer.
The Blues were expected to be among the top teams in the league, but after six Premier League games, Chelsea had only earned five points. Currently, they are farther from the Champions League spots than the drop zone. Prior to Wednesday, when they defeated Brighton at home in the EFL Cup, Mauricio Pochettino’s club had gone three games without a victory.
Chelsea didn’t completely control that game either, but finding a way to win is what matters most to them. Maybe that victory will boost Chelsea’s spirits before their match against Fulham.
Verdict
Chelsea’s victory over Brighton in the middle of the week may have taken the pressure off of them, but it wasn’t exactly a convincing triumph. Although confidence may be better, injuries are still causing havoc.
Due to the defensive absences, Pochettino will have to change up his backline on Monday night, which might give Fulham’s forwards an advantage. Jackson’s ban might potentially create serious issues up top because Broja has just made a long-awaited comeback. There can be another situation where Pochettino needs to think outside the box.
The return of Joao Palhinha to the starting lineup has been essential to Fulham’s recent improvement in form, which includes winning this match last season. The presence of their west London opponents won’t be something to worry about for the Cottagers, as Silva’s team has a strong chance of winning.
Three points aren’t out of the question, either. Both of their league wins this season have been by 1-0 scorelines, and Chelsea have lost two of their last three in the top flight by that scoreline. Less goals could well be seen here, and an under-2.5-goal prediction looks like the most likely outcome.
