The spoils were shared last season as both the Gunners and Red Devils won one match-up each, and while this contest arrives very early on in the campaign, Sunday’s result could prove significant ahead of the September international break.
Verdict
Both clubs have serious defensive flaws that need to be resolved. While Manchester United are without Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane and looked terrible at the back even before their injuries, new recruit Jurrien Timber was injured on his debut for Arsenal and has since given up three goals.
Erik Ten Hag’s team, though, is showing potential moving forward. The Red Devils have generated 7.44 anticipated goals, which is more than Brighton, Aston Villa, and Manchester City combined, and they are tied for first in terms of big chance creation (10).
While the visitors should be able to score against an Arsenal defense that is still in its infancy, keeping the Gunners quiet at the other end might be going too far. Both teams have scored in each of the last four competitive meetings between these rivals, and I’m backing that on Sunday, while a 2-1 scoreline for Arsenal appeals. Arsenal have scored exactly twice in both home games this season, winning 2-1 once, while Manchester United have conceded exactly twice in their last two matches.
Neither group will approach this with the best of intentions. Early in the season, they both displayed defensive weaknesses.
