03-09-23 Daily Football Predictions: Arsenal vs Manchester United

Betting Tips

Arsenal will play host to Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday in the Premier League’s marquee matchup. Both teams’ season starts have been less than stellar.

Last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Fulham marked Mikel Arteta’s team’s first loss of the year, while Manchester United’s thrilling comeback defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2.

Matchday No. 4 will come to a close with a thrilling match between Arsenal and Manchester United on Sunday afternoon at Emirates Stadium.

Eight days ago, the Gunners made a mistake for the first time this season as they surprisingly let a 2-1 lead and a man advantage against Fulham slip away in what resulted in a 2-2 draw in North London.

By no means can Mikel Arteta be happy with the way his team has started the season. Arsenal did manage to earn seven out of a possible nine points in three games, but they did not perform well in any of their three games thus far.

On the other hand, Manchester United managed to overcome a two-goal disadvantage at home against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Red Devils, who have won two of their first three games this season, completed their comeback with goals from Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes.

The team’s performance against Wolves on the first day did not look fantastic at all, but in the two games against Tottenham (despite the loss in London) and Nottingham Forest, we saw improvements.

The spoils were shared last season as both the Gunners and Red Devils won one match-up each, and while this contest arrives very early on in the campaign, Sunday’s result could prove significant ahead of the September international break.

Both clubs have serious defensive flaws that need to be resolved. While Manchester United are without Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane and looked terrible at the back even before their injuries, new recruit Jurrien Timber was injured on his debut for Arsenal and has since given up three goals.

Erik Ten Hag’s team, though, is showing potential moving forward. The Red Devils have generated 7.44 anticipated goals, which is more than Brighton, Aston Villa, and Manchester City combined, and they are tied for first in terms of big chance creation (10).

While the visitors should be able to score against an Arsenal defense that is still in its infancy, keeping the Gunners quiet at the other end might be going too far. Both teams have scored in each of the last four competitive meetings between these rivals, and I’m backing that on Sunday, while a 2-1 scoreline for Arsenal appeals. Arsenal have scored exactly twice in both home games this season, winning 2-1 once, while Manchester United have conceded exactly twice in their last two matches.

Neither group will approach this with the best of intentions. Early in the season, they both displayed defensive weaknesses. We have grounds to anticipate goals on Sunday because the Over 2.5 goals FT and BTTS choice has won each of the past four head-to-head matches in the Premier League between these rivals.
