07-08-23 Daily Football Predictions: England vs Nigeria

Betting Tips

Monday morning’s round of 16 Women’s World Cup match between England and Nigeria promises to be a thrilling one. The Lionesses weren’t exactly lighting up the tournament before their significant victory earlier this week. Sarina Wiegman’s team is still scoring goals as they attempt to advance to the quarterfinals. Nigeria, meanwhile, is competing in this tournament for the third time after placing second behind Australia.

England vs Nigeria

Nigeria placed second in Group B (five points), while the Lionesses took first place in Group D with nine points.

The Lionesses have high expectations after witnessing the Junior Lions win the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last month. After winning their first two games by a combined score of 1-0, Sarina Wiegman’s women’s team had what might be considered a poor start to the competition. The Lionesses then made a major statement by defeating China 6-1 to advance to the Women’s World Cup’s knockout rounds for the fifth consecutive time.

Chelsea midfielder Lauren James was the star of the show with a brace and three assists to help the European champions claim maximum points from three games.

The Super Falcons concluded their group stage campaign with a goalless draw against the Irish to qualify for a second straight knockout appearance.

Nigeria’s team has only advanced past the group stage three times in this competition. The ”Super Falcons” have participated in every Women’s World Cup to date, with their best performance being in 1999 when they advanced to the quarterfinals. In the most recent competition in 2019, Germany eliminated them in the round of 16.

Verdict

Nigeria, on the other hand, has emerged as one of the surprises of the tournament and displayed tenacity and talent to advance in a group that included Olympic winners Canada. The 11-time African champions will be the overwhelming underdogs once more and will enjoy this position because it helped them in the group stage. Asisat Oshoala of Barcelona is one of many game-changers at the disposal of manager Randy Waldrum.

With the exception of their 6-1 victory over China, the England Women have had difficulty scoring goals lately. In five of their last six games, including the Women’s Finalissima championship game versus Brazil, the Lionesses have scored fewer than 1.5 goals. Five of those games had under 2.5 goals scored at the conclusion.

Nigerian women are also excellent on defense. Two clean sheets have been recorded by the Super Falcons thus far in this competition, but neither match resulted in a goal.

European winners England has a chance to go to the Women’s World Cup’s last eight. When they defeated China 6-1 in their most recent game, they significantly improved. They may or may not use the 3-5-2 configuration once more. That might not matter too much though if Lauren James is performing at her best. Though they drew two of their games 0-0, Nigeria did well to advance out of their group. Performance against the very best teams doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll win this game.
