Fans will flock to the Emirates for Sunday’s standout Premier League contest as Arsenal welcomes champions Manchester City to their home.
Both sides took to the Champions League stage away from home in midweek. The Gunners were bested 2-1 by Lens, while the Citizens left it late to overcome RB Leipzig 3-1.
Arsenal vs Manchester City
After a thrilling week of European football, the Premier League will resume this weekend with more games. This week, I didn’t think Arsenal would defeat Lens, and I’m not sure why Arteta started Bukayo Saka. He’s got a big game against Manchester City coming up, and they might regret their choice.
For this match on Sunday, both Manchester City and Arsenal appear to be without important players. The longest current streak of any Premier League player, Bukayo Saka’s appearance in 87 straight Premier League games for Arsenal may come to an end after he was substituted due to injury in the midweek UEFA Champions League defeat at Lens.
After losing 2-1 to Wolves last weekend in the Premier League, Manchester City now has a chance to drop two straight games in the league for the first time since December 2018 (when they lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester City). With a 3-1 victory at RB Leipzig on Wednesday night in the UCL, due to goals from Phil Foden, Julián Alvarez, and Jérémy Doku, they snapped a brief two-game losing skid in all competitions. That setback followed an EFL Cup loss to Newcastle United three days earlier.
Arsenal hopes to unseat City this season, but Guardiola’s team has already demonstrated that they are still the best team in the Premier League, despite losing to Wolves the previous weekend. In the Champions League on Tuesday night, Lens overcame an early deficit to win 2-1, defeating the Gunners as well.
Verdict
When these two managers square off, there are a ton of tactical considerations to make, but Guardiola has consistently outperformed his protégé. In the Premier League, Arsenal has yet to defeat Pep Guardiola’s City
While the visitors are without their anchor in the middle of the field, Saka and Martinelli’s likely absences strongly favor City.
At Lens, Arsenal’s attacking balance was seriously off in the second half; they could have a repeat of those problems on Sunday against a much stronger opponent. City, meanwhile, might have several of their treble-winning team’s key players back. Overall, the odds favor an away victory, but the Gunners will undoubtedly give it their best go.
In practically every matchup between Arsenal and City in recent years, there has been a BTTS. This is the very minimum we expect from this matchup because they are currently the two strongest clubs in the league. Both clubs average more than two goals each game, and this game must be won at any cost.
