Rio rivals Fluminense and Flamengo, who are separated by just two points near the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro. They will compete for victory on Sunday at the Maracana. The most recent Fla-Flu derby is taking place while the hosts lag their cross-city rivals in the Serie A standings and as both teams have advanced to the Copa Libertadores’ round of 16.
Fluminense vs Flamengo
This weekend, Fluminense and Flamengo will square off in the Brazilian top division with the visitors hoping to maintain their title hopes. The hosts are now in fourth place, two points behind Flamengo, who are in second. Last season, Fluminense finished ahead of Flamengo, and they intend to do so once more this campaign. The ‘Team of Warriors’ are presently two spots behind their opponents, but if other results go their way, a victory on Sunday may see them climb into second place.
Meanwhile, Flamengo is aiming to win the Serie A championship for the first time since 2020. The Scarlet and Black came close in 2021, finishing second, but they weren’t at their best the previous year. Although there have been advancements this year, being 10 points behind league leaders Botafogo demonstrates how much work is still needed.
Fluminense earned four points from their last three games despite a varied bag of outcomes. They began by drawing 1-1 with Sporting Cristal, lost 1-0 to Sao Paulo, then defeated Internacional by a score of 2-0. Flamengo has defeated Athletico Paranaense 0-2 in their last three games, drew 1-1 with Palmeiras, and won 2-1 over Athletico Paranaense. Out of six possible away games in Serie A, the Scarlet Black won three, drew one, and lost two.
Verdict
Even though Fluminense has lost two of their past three games, they are a very different team at home. The only team with more home victories in Serie A this year is the league’s top team, Botafogo. Fernando Diniz is also unbeaten in 17 straight home games across all competitions heading into this weekend’s match.
Flamengo’s poor road performance this year is the key factor keeping them 10 points off the top of the Serie A league. Jorge Sampaoli’s team has only won three of their seven away games thus far. An away victory here would be unexpected given that their recent road record versus the hosts in all competitions isn’t terrific either.
This season, Flamengo’s performance on the road has been hit-and-miss. Of their seven league games, Flamengo has won three and lost three, including a crushing 4-0 defeat at Bragantino less than a month ago. In addition, Jorge Sampaoli’s team’s away campaign began with back-to-back 2-1 defeats against Internacional and Athletico Paranaense, with a similar result looking quite likely for the game on Sunday.
