One of Tuesday’s marquee Champions League matches will take place under the brilliant lights of the Parc des Princes. Paris Saint-Germain welcomes Borussia Dortmund to the French city in Group F.
In this year’s group of death, where Newcastle United and seven-time champion AC Milan are also battling for the top two positions, the two continental behemoths were paired up against one another.
PSG vs Borussia Dortmund
In the first match in Group F of the Champions League, PSG hosts Borussia Dortmund. With Milan and Newcastle United as the other two teams, this is a difficult group for everyone involved. The defending Champions League champions from France continue to put forth great effort. They’ll seek to improve on their performance from the previous year, when they lost to Bayern Munich in the round of 16.
They suffered a 3-2 home loss to Nice over the weekend, ending their Ligue 1 winning streak. At least Mbappe has remained with them for what may be his final season. He scored twice against Nice to bring his league total to seven goals. As of Sunday, September 17, while this article was being written, PSG was fourth in Ligue 1.
Despite being unbeaten in the German Bundesliga this year, Borussia Dortmund is just sixth in the standings. They have won two of their games and had a few draws in the other ones. They won 4-2 against Freiburg over the weekend after coming from behind at halftime. In the 2020–21 season, they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
The Black and Yellows fell to Chelsea in the round of 16 last season. The Prussians have lost four of their last six away games in the Champions League, with only one game ending in victory.
Verdict
Paris Saint-Germain is never far away from controversy, and this season started in a similar vein; with the ouster of Kylian Mbappe from the first-team squad, only to integrate him back later on, following the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar. They were very active during the transfer window, with a focus on rebuilding their attack.
Attacker Randal Kolo Muani was a late addition to the squad for a fee of €95 million from Eintracht Frankfurt, with the likes of Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee Kang-in, Bradley Barcola, and Marco Asensio all joining the club. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, sold their star player this summer, with midfielder Jude Bellingham joining Real Madrid for €105 million.
Ugarte and Marquinhos’ projected returns will also add a layer of tenacity to the Parisiens’ starting lineup, but Dortmund’s in-form attackers should still have a glitter in their eyes and can earn a point for their side in what looks to be an exciting matchup.
With BTTS occurring in all but one game for each of these teams this season, we should see goals in this one.
