This coming Thursday will mark the start of the World Cup campaigns for both New Zealand and Norway. Eden Park is the venue for the game. In Auckland, the ninth FIFA Women’s World Cup gets underway in front of a sold-out audience of over 40,000 people, many of whom are hoping to see history. Co-hosts New Zealand will compete in their sixth World Cup, however, they have yet to win a game, have only managed three draws, and have lost 12 games overall.
New Zealand vs Norway
On Thursday, July 20, the first match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place at Eden Park between New Zealand and Norway. The tournament’s co-hosts are the Football Ferns. With a 1-0 loss to Italy in a friendly match last weekend, they completed their preparations for the competition.
Valentina Giacenti’s goal in the 23rd minute was the difference. In the meantime, Norway and Sweden, their neighbors in Scandinavia, split the spoils in a six-goal thriller. Both teams scored in extra time in a thrilling conclusion to the game, with Frida Leonhardsen-Maanum scoring a hat trick for Norway.
The Grasshoppers qualified for the World Cup by winning Group F of the qualifying rounds. The final two teams in Group A are Switzerland and the Philippines. Ria Percival, a Tottenham player with 163 caps, Rebekah Stott, a defender for Brighton & Hove Albion, and CJ Bott, a player for Leicester City, all have plenty of experience in the squad, but Norway will feel they have the advantage when it comes to the star-studded names in their international roll call, especially with a certain Ada Hegerberg waiting in the wings.
Despite having a distinguished resume that includes management positions as England’s interim manager and the head coach of Great Britain’s Olympic team, this is Hege Riise’s biggest test to date.
With players like former Ballon d’Or winner Hegerberg, Graham Hansen and Ingrid Engen of Barcelona, Maren Mjelde and Guro Reiten of Chelsea, Tuva Hansen of Bayern Munich, and Frida Maanum of Arsenal, Norway has a good opportunity to advance.
Verdict
Although one of the most successful teams in women’s football, Norway has recently fallen short of its former high standards and been surpassed by other countries. They have lost their last four games, which makes their tournament form less than stellar.
Co-host of the competition, New Zealand, is a strong underdog to have an influence. Prior to the competition, they also struggled to establish themselves in friendlies.
In five of New Zealand’s last 10 games across all competitions, the over 2.5 goals wager has paid off. Along the road, they averaged 0.4 goals. In five of Norway’s previous ten games in all competitions, there were over 2.5 goals. In these games, they were able to score 1.6 goals on average.
Expect Norway to beat the co-hosts easily to start their campaign off on the right foot.
