Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion lock horns with Premier League points at stake. The latest iteration of the so-called M23 derby takes place at Selhurst Park on Thursday evening. Roy Hodgson’s side produced a phenomenal comeback to draw 2-2 with Manchester City at the weekend, while the Seagulls were played off the park in a 2-0 beating at the hands of Arsenal.
Crystal Palace vs Brighton
On Thursday, Crystal Palace will play rivals Brighton & Hove Albion in a Premier League match, fresh off an impressive 2-2 draw against Manchester City.
Last Saturday, with a 2-0 deficit heading into the last 15 minutes of play, Crystal Palace appeared destined for a simple defeat at the hands of Manchester City. However, goals from Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta allowed the Eagles to salvage a crucial point from the verge of defeat.
Nevertheless, they are still without a win in six Premier League games and will be eager to change their luck and get back to winning ways. With 17 points, Roy Hodgson’s team is currently eight points clear of the relegation zone in 15th place in the table.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s season is still erratic in the meantime. The Seagulls lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates this past weekend after defeating Marseille 1-0 in midweek to take first place in Group B of the Europa League.
Mikel Arteta’s team climbed to the top of the standings thanks to goals in the second half from Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, while Brighton barely threatened the Gunners and managed just one attempt on goal. Brighton has faltered recently after having a strong start to the season. They have only triumphed once in their previous four Premier League games, so Roberto Di Zerbi must figure out a method to inspire his players to play their thrilling style of football again.
Verdict
Brighton and Crystal Palace are two teams that have had difficulty scoring goals. Brighton no longer appears to be the thrilling team that had a strong start to the year. Palace’s confidence would have greatly benefitted from last weekend’s tie with City. But as is usually the case at Selhurst Park, the two clubs will probably split the spoils.
Before Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Arsenal, the Seagulls had scored in 32 straight league games. Since May, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in the top division. Ten of Brighton’s seventeen league games this season—two of which have been on the road—have seen over 3.5 goals scored, and their matchup with Palace has all the ingredients for a high-scoring holiday encounter.
In light of this, 2-2 would be one possible result because both sides have scored in 10 of the past 12 head-to-head matches and three of the last four encounters between these two rivals have ended in a draw.
