Since Fernando Diniz’s club had previously finished the domestic season with two straight losses, victory over Al-Ahly was crucial to the group’s morale. The Copa Libertadores winners have been playing well offensively, but they will be up against their toughest opposition in a while today.
Verdict
Under Guardiola’s leadership, City has won every domestic trophy available. They also finished in the running for the Champions League title the previous season and earlier this year they won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time ever.
For Guardiola and his team, winning the Club World Cup would be the ultimate goal. Judging by their respective performances in the semifinals, they should have no trouble defeating Fluminense of Brazil.
Manchester City’s defense was tied for the best in the English Premier League the previous year, but they haven’t been as stable this year. The Citizens have only kept one clean sheet in their previous nine games across all competitions, and they have given up the second-most goals of any club in the current Premier League top four. Out of those games, just two have finished with fewer than 2.5 goals.
Although Fluminense has kept a clean sheet in half of their past six games, they face a tougher opponent in Manchester City. Fluminense has shown resiliency in defense recently. It is improbable that Pep’s team will lose this week after scoring at least twice in six of their previous seven games across all competitions.
