The battle for a top-four finish in Italy’s top division continues on Monday when Atalanta hosts José Mourinho’s Roma. Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia is where AS Roma will attempt to beat Atalanta on Monday.
Hosts Atalanta are currently in sixth place in the table, with Roma resting on a five-point cushion inside the top four. The race for Europe looks to be fascinating in Serie A this season, with Milan and Inter offering a reminder of Italy’s ability to compete at the highest European level.
Atalanta vs AS Roma
The hosts’ dreams of finishing in the top four were shattered last season due to a lack of consistency, and it doesn’t appear like the club has learnt from that. To put things in context, Atalanta has only won two of their last eight Serie A games. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team will need to be at their best to take something away from Roma, who boast the third-best defense in the division.
Roma appeared to be in a comfortable third-place position until Juventus’ 15-point penalty for unlawful transfer activity was lifted midweek. This has dropped the Yellow and Reds to fourth position, just three points ahead of fifth-placed Milan, implying that a defeat here would be devastating. Having won four of their past five games in all competitions, the visitors will be optimistic that they can take maximum points from Monday’s game.
Atalanta’s previous three matches have featured a bit of everything, beginning with a 1-3 victory over Cremonese. This was followed by a disastrous 0-2 setback against Bologna, before a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina. Roma defeated 1-0 to Feyenoord, 3-0 to Udinese, and 2-1 to Feyenoord in their past three matches. Meanwhile, Roma has won twice, drawn once, and lost three of their previous six Serie A road games.
Atalanta and Roma have been keeping things tight in recent meetings, with goals coming infrequently. This predicts that a goalless draw is in the cards for this coming Monday.
Verdict
Given the opponents’ strong defense, we feel Atalanta will struggle to score on Monday. And, given that only one of the last four encounters between these two legendary Serie A teams resulted in more than two goals, we are betting on fewer than 2.5 goals.
Outside of the city, the lack of free-flowing attacking play is set to return this weekend, with Mourinho optimistic of a clean sheet in Bergamo. In their last four home league games, Atalanta has scored less than one goal per game.
The race for European slots is expected to take a few more twists and turns before the season’s end, but Roma is well set to join city rivals Lazio and champions-elect Napoli in the Champions League.
The outcomes of this season’s European events and the Coppa Italia will also have an impact on the overall standings. However, based on an inconsistent 2023, Atalanta appears to be heading toward a Europa League finish.
Tip: AS Roma to Win or Draw / Under 2.5 goals
