All eyes will be set at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night when Newcastle United and Manchester City meet in the third round of the English League Cup. Newcastle United is coming off an 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. While the Magpies humiliated the Blades in their previous match, Manchester City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 to continue their winning streak in 2023–24.
Newcastle United vs Manchester City
The second meeting between Newcastle United and Manchester City will take place in the League Cup. St. James Park, home of Newcastle United, will serve as the venue for this third-round game. The home team will be eager to exact revenge for their earlier 1-0 league defeat at the Etihad Stadium. Both teams had victories in their weekend games before this contest.
For their third straight victory, Newcastle United destroyed Sheffield United 8-0. In those three games, they’ve also kept clean sheets, and they’ll want more of that here. Newcastle United has only failed to score twice in their current run of seven games. The Magpies will enter this game with confidence after winning three of their last five home games.
Manchester City has not yet suffered a loss this season, and they have scored two goals or more in each of their last five games. Coming off a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, they are here. They kept their first clean sheet in five games throughout that contest. In the eight games they have played this year, it was their third victory. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of their team’s eight games so far this season.
The team led by Pep Guardiola has a commanding lead over Newcastle United going into this encounter. In this matchup, they’ll be looking to extend their winning streak of 10 games. However, due to injuries and bans, the Spaniard will only have a small pool of players to choose from.
Verdict
Newcastle will be optimistic that they can continue where they left off at Bramall Lane after crushing Sheffield United on Sunday, but Manchester City will have other plans.
Although we anticipate that Guardiola’s team will be challenged by the Magpies, we see City showing off and advancing to the next round with a slim victory.
The performance of Newcastle United at St. James’ Park was a major factor in their outstanding season last year. This season, they have yet to demonstrate that dominance at home. The Magpies’ most recent two home games saw them lose to Liverpool’s 10 men and win just 1-0 over Brentford.
Additionally, they have a terrible track record against Manchester City recently. Eight of the last nine encounters between these two clubs ended in defeat for Eddie Howe’s team.
These two sides are in good form coming into this game. Most of that is occasioned by their abilities in attack. They have both been too high-scoring games recently and we believe this trend will extend here.
