Inter Milan began the new Serie A season with a victory last week, and they go to Cagliari on Monday night for their first away game.
While Inter, who missed out on several possible signings, defeated Monza on the opening day, their Sardinian counterparts were content with a point upon their promotion to the top division.
Cagliari vs Inter
The Gli Isolani were able to secure an immediate return to Calcio’s top level after being relegated from the top flight in 2021–2022 thanks to a 2-1 aggregate victory over Bari in the play-off final. Claudio Ranieri, the 71-year-old manager who played a significant role in the Sardinian club’s swift promotion, can be pleased with his players for making their Serie A debut.
Cagliari’s return to the top flight wasn’t off to the best of starts, as they were held to a scoreless draw by Torino on Monday. Prior to that, on August 12. Claudio Ranieri’s team defeated Palermo 2-1 in extra time to secure their place in the second round of the Coppa Italia.
The hosts haven’t lost since suffering a 2-1 loss to Parma on April 22. Inter, meanwhile, defeated Monza 2-0 on Saturday to begin their new Serie A campaign. That was consistent with their outstanding preseason play, in which they won four of five games while going undefeated.
The Nerazzurri’s upcoming opponent has lost their last four matches, scoring two goals and allowing 11 goals since a 1-1 draw. Inter Milan have not had a great season in the Italian league, suffering 12 defeats from 38 rounds. A few failures that did not allow them to seriously threaten Napoli in the race for the Scudetto. Last season, they decorated their trophy cabinets by winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italia. Then reaching the Champions League final, and losing to Manchester City 0-1.
Cagliari faces the daunting prospect of taking on a powerful Inter team while attempting to retain their good home form. Expect Inzaghi’s team to continue winning throughout the match, given the gap in skill and depth between the two teams. Additionally, Inter may take pride in their recent dominance on Italian soil, where they have won 10 of their last 11 matches in all competitions.
In front of their own supporters, Cagliari will undoubtedly want to impress and make life difficult for the Milan juggernauts. However, maintaining Inter’s offensive prowess is easier said than done, so anything other than a victory for the visitors would be unexpected.
Marcus Thuram’s signing to Inter provides them with a dangerous front two, but Lautaro Martinez is without a doubt their primary man up top. Martinez has the highest minutes-per-goal average among players from the top five European leagues who have scored at least 15 goals in 2023. In the past year, he has scored an average of every 89 minutes and 48 seconds, including twice against Monza.
The Inter forward’s eight goals in eight Serie A games against Cagliari are the most he’s ever scored against a team in the league. Support him in increasing that total on Monday with a strike.
