Betting Tips
Manchester United takes on their rowdy neighbors Manchester City in the 19th Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon, and large crowds of fans are expected to assemble at Old Trafford. Both sides come into the much-awaited match fresh off Champions League wins—the Red Devils destroyed Copenhagen 1-0 while the defending European champions defeated BSC Young Boys 3-1.
Manchester United vs Manchester City
Manchester United is playing well going into this home game, having won three straight. Their most recent match was their first group-stage win in the Champions League, a 1-0 triumph over Kobenhavn. Nonetheless, United was undoubtedly lucky to secure the three points.
In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana had to prevent a last-minute penalty attempt for the Danish team in order to vault them up to third place in the group. They now intend to try to maintain their winning streak in the domestic league, where they have won the last two games.
Following a depressing run of three losses in four games, Manchester City has also posted back-to-back victories. The Citizens’ most recent game was a 3-1 Champions League road victory over Young Boys of Switzerland. With the win, City maintains its perfect record in the group stage, leading RB Leipzig by three points at this point.
In the league, the Sky Blues defeated Brighton 2-1 at the Etihad in their most recent match. Since Arsenal shut them out for the first time this league season three weeks ago, they have now scored five goals. Even though Guardiola’s team has a pristine 4-0-0 record at home in the league, they have appeared far more exposed when playing away.
Verdict
Manchester City hasn’t played at its peak level this season, and that will come at Old Trafford. Even though Pep Guardiola’s team has lost its previous two away Premier League games against Wolves and Arsenal, they are currently second in the competition.
The Citizens did win the Champions League 3-1 against Young Boys, but they have now lost three of their previous four away games after losing the League Cup at Newcastle. These teams’ recent games have been interesting to watch. There have been BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored in each of the last four derby matches, for a total of 20 goals scored in those previous meetings.
Even with Rodri back, City’s defense looks questionable. Ten of the last eleven games, including the last six, have seen the Citizens concede. Manchester United have scored goals in ten of their previous 11 games going into this one, so they have enough offensive firepower to cause problems for City.
The last four matches between these two clubs have resulted in 20 goals shared, with both teams scoring in each. In that stretch, City has outscored United nearly two to one, scoring 13 goals to United’s seven.
In light of those previous games and the relative difficulties both clubs have had this season, I anticipate another close game with goals scored on both ends and at least three goals overall. For this reason, I’m betting on BTTS and over 2.5 goals in Sunday’s much-awaited Manchester derby match.
