This weekend, fans will witness one of the greatest rivalries in football, the Derby della Madonnina between Inter and Milan. The penultimate season’s champions, Inter, and the last season’s trophy winners, Milan, will come face to face once again to show whether their city is black and blue or red and black.
The Rossoneri won 3-2 in their first league clash of the season back in September but have suffered an alarming dip in form of late.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Milan in 2023, with the reigning Scudetto champions now winless in six, having now lost each of their last three with a remarkable 12 goals leaked in losses against Inter (3:0), Lazio (4:0), and embarrassingly on home soil against Sassuolo (5:2). Now having dropped to fifth in Serie A, some 15 points behind runaway leaders Napoli, the Rosonneri can ill afford any further slip-ups if they are to avoid slipping out of Champions League qualification contention.
Form Guide: Inter Milan
Even though they’re sitting in the No. 2 position in Serie A, the chances that Inter Milan will get to the top of the table don’t seem that great. It’s because table leaders Napoli have 13 points more than them at the moment. Still, the season is long – we’re only at the halfway point right now – so anything can happen in the next 20 rounds.
One thing is clear, though. To get back in the race for the title, Inter Milan needs to enter a winning run. Their form isn’t bad, but it’s not great either. They’re 3-1-1 in Serie A since the start of the year, which isn’t something to be proud of knowing that four of their five opponents were teams from the bottom half of the table.
Inter Milan´s previous match was a 1-0 win against Atalanta. They had three shots on target and six corners in the Coppa Italia match, with Matteo Darmian on the scoresheet.
Form Guide: AC Milan
The reigning champions of the Italian Serie A aren’t doing well at the moment. They’re 1-2-2 in the league since the start of the year, which has significantly lowered their chance of retaining the trophy.
The reason behind their poor run is that they have some serious problems with injuries, especially at the back. Their first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan is out and is replaced by Ciprian Tatarusanu. With the Romanian veteran between the sticks, AC Milan conceded 18 goals in the seven games they’ve played so far in 2023.
Stefano Pioli’s side have crumbled since returning after the World Cup, winning just one of their five Serie A games. A 5-2 home defeat at the hands of lowly Sassuolo was the latest embarrassing reverse for Milan.
Repeating last season’s title win now seems out of the question – and it may even be a tough task to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. A win here would definitely help but the Rossoneri do not seem to be the best team in the city at the moment.
How the game could go
Inter comes into this fixture in somewhat better form, winning four of their last five matches, although a painful home loss to Empoli now sees them trailing leaders Napoli by a wide 13 points through 20 games.
Still, the Nerazzurri have enjoyed a degree of dominance in this fixture in recent years – winning four of the last six when they have the “home” advantage at the shared San Siro venue.
Certainly, Milan´s recent woes make it easy to back Inter in this fixture, and having leaked 12 goals in just three games, it´s hard to imagine Milan managing to shut up shop against an Inter side that has picked up vital wins against both Napoli and Atalanta in recent weeks.
Inter Milan to win
By Head Coach Stefano Pioli’s admission, AC Milan is in full crisis mode and their embarrassing 5-2 loss at home to Sassuolo last weekend was their fourth defeat in five games in all competitions. Milan has conceded nine times in their last two Serie A assignments and with their confidence at rock bottom, they look ill-equipped to deal with Inter in the Derby della Madonnina. Inter coasted to a 3-0 win against their rivals in the Super Cup just a couple of weeks ago and they will relish kicking their neighbors when they’re down in this one. Bet9ja have 1.98, 1xbet have 2.03 and Paripesa have 2.03 odds.
Over 2.5 Goals
AC Milan’s defending has been appallingly lax in recent weeks and their 5-2 loss against Sassuolo followed hot on the heels of a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Lazio. Inter put three goals past the ailing Milan backline in the Super Cup on January 18th and they will be rubbing their hands at the prospect of facing the same brittle defence on Sunday. Over 2.5 goals has landed in each of Milan’s last four matches overall and our second prediction tips the goals to flow again in Sunday’s derby. Bet9ja have 1.80 odds, Paripesa have 1.86 and 1xbet have 1.86 odds.
Anytime Goalscorer (Tottenham)
Two goals from Lautaro Martinez were enough to come back from a goal down away at Cremonese at the weekend and claim three vital points. But a draw with Monza and a defeat at home to Empoli since the restart has probably ended Inter’s hopes of a Scudetto this season. The striker knows how to step up when necessary and we trust he can provide goals today. Bet9ja have 3.25 odds for him to score while Paripesa have 2.95.
The veteran striker has scored 7 goals this season in the Serie A and will be called upon today in the derby. He scored against AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup just a few games ago and now he has a chance of facing them yet again today. He has a decent history against this side and we are counting on that to be the reason why we can see him scoring here today. Bet9ja have 3.40 odds for him to score while Paripesa have 2.50.
Anytime Goalscorer (AC Milan)
Portuguese winger Rafael Leao’s long-term future at AC Milan might be in question, however, the 23-year-old remains one of the Rossoneri’s most-talented players and he should return to the XI on Sunday having been named on the bench against Sassuolo. Leao has provided 13 goals contributions in 16 starts in Serie A this term and he has the skills to do some more damage this weekend. Bet9ja have 4.85 odds for him to score while Paripesa have 3.70.
Giroud can have some respite scoring in his sides lose against Sassuolo last weekend. Today he faces a very big foe in Inter Milan as he scored last season to help his side to the title. Today he can be the difference yet again as his side needs a win to ensure a place in the top four Bet9ja have 3.50 odds for him to score while Paripesa have 2.90.
