The final Europa League Group E matchup between Liverpool and Union SG occurs Thursday night at Lotto Park in Belgium.
Union SG still has a slim possibility of placing in the top two and earning a ticket in the knockout stages, even though the Reds have already advanced to the round of 16 as group champions.

The outcome of the other group match won’t matter if Union Saint-Gilloise loses this one because their chances of making it to the knockout stage are slim. Nevertheless, the hosts have strong momentum going into this match. They defeated Sporting Charleroi 3-1 in their Saturday match, their third straight victory across all competitions, extending their winning streak to six games.
Union SG, on the other hand, has only won once in five games in this league, and that victory was at home against LASK during week three. Since then, they played out a draw with Toulouse a couple of weeks ago and lost the rematch 3-0 in Austria.
Liverpool, meanwhile, appears to be returning to something approaching their best this season following a very disappointing season by their own standards in 2022–2023. They are leading the Premier League after 16 games this season, in addition to being at the top of the group rankings in this competition.
The Reds defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 last weekend to record their fourth straight victory across all competitions and their sixth straight win without a loss. In addition, they have triumphed in four of their five games in this competition; Toulouse defeated them 3-2 in the fourth week.
Verdict
Liverpool had already secured first place in Group E with a four-point lead before their last 2023 Europa League match. The Reds may rotate for this trip to Belgium with an eye toward their matchup with Manchester United on Sunday because they are directly into the round of 16.
In what may be their last European match of the year, Union Saint-Gilloise has a lot on the line. The hosts still have a chance to pass Toulouse and move up to second place, but a loss would drop them behind LASK and eliminate them from European contention altogether.
Fortunately, the home team is winning their last seven games, and they can continue this winning streak against the Reds, who will probably be significantly depleted by rotation.
Given that both sides are playing well before their meeting on Thursday, goals should be expected in this fixture. In their last 12 games, USG has only lost once and won nine, including their last six at home. At least three goals were scored in each of the six games, and five of those games also featured BTTS.
Liverpool is also typically a dependable choice for goal chasers. In four of the five EL games played so far this season—a 3:1 victory over LASK and a 3:2 loss against Toulouse—the Reds have seen more than 3.5 goals scored.
In the end, it’s difficult to see past a high-scoring match, so I’m going with over 2.5 goals as a safe bet.
