Week Six Review
Social media is agog with reactions of Real Madrid’s loss to Atlético de Madrid in the Madrid derby. This is the biggest event from week six in the 2023/24 LaLiga season which has seen a lot of craziness already.
Girona are silently racking up wins and points and are proving to be dark horses, while Diego Simeone is doing all he can to shed the “defensive coach” tag that he earned over the years. It has been an interesting season this far and week six will go down in the record books as one of the best weeks in the season.
Derby De Madrid ends in a shocking result as Las Palmas secure first three points of the season
Week six of the 2023/24 LaLiga season was a week of intense football activity across the various host cities of LaLiga.
Two more red cards went into the records as LaLiga’s foul and booking numbers continue to dwarf all other football leagues across the world. Las Palmas, one of the teams who saw red in week six, also managed to win their first match of the season.
The newly promoted side had come into the week with 2 draws and threw losses but their hard-fought three points against Granada has seen them leapfrog their relegation position into 15th. That leaves UD Almeria as the only team to be winless in the league this season.
They were headed for a full time draw against Granada but a 92md minute goal from midfielder Kirian Rodríguez gave them all three points.
Getafe almost had a big win but the doggedness of Real Sociedad was too much for the Madrid-based side to overcome. 4-3 was their scoreline in the game as the Basque side continued their charge for top four so they will not lose the privilege of competing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
On the other side of Madrid was the biggest game of the week. The Madrid derby, which many expected the LaLiga record holders, Real Madrid, to take following their exploits in the league.
Athletic and Simeone had different ideas because it was guns blazing from the first blast of the whistle, leaving Carlo Ancelotti and his boys to play catch up on the field and in the area of tactics. A brace from former Madrid man Alvaro Morata was the highlight of the evening and not even Jude Bellingham could save them this time around.
Madrid were outplayed at every level and this slip up saw their eternal rivals Barcelona take top spot in the league.
The story could have also been different if not for the eight-minute flurry that the Catalan giants’ had to come back from two goals down against Celta De Vigo.

Table
For the first time this season, the defending champions Barcelona are top of the table. This is thanks to their superior goal difference as they are on the same points as their fellow Catalan team, Girona. Atlético are fifth on the table but could easily be first, second or third if they did not have a game in hand. Valencia are the most improved team this season with their occupancy of the sixth place on the log showing the growth that Ruben Baraja has facilitated at the club.

Top Scorers
Alvaro Morata and Robert Lewandowski have caught up with Jude Bellingham with five goals each. The Real Madrid midfielder is on a two-game goal drought and the two strikers are likely to leave him in the dust. Sergio Arribas of Almeria is making a case for himself as clubs are paying attention to his prowess in front of goal. His four goals so far in the league put him joint second but unfortunately those goals have not translated to three points for Almeria just yet.

Takefusa Kubo scored a brace before the international break to shoot into the top three just behind leading goalscorer Jude Bellingham, who failed to find the back of the net in week five. However, the Japanese firecracker has gone down the list based on the goals scored this weekend. Barcelona is the only team with two players (Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski) with three goals or more from the first five LaLiga games. Both players scored in the Catalans’ 5 – 0 thrashing of Real Betis.
