Bayern end season with comprehensive win 

Bayern Munich closed out their title winning campaign in style by emphatically beating Hoffenheim 4-0 at the PreZero Arena. It is not often that a team loses and is delighted but that was the case with the home side. They were just three points ahead of the relegation/playoff position and needed at least a draw to be safe but despite their defeat they are still safe thanks to Heidenheim also losing. Hoffenheim to their credit managed to keep a rampant Bayern side at bay until the 33rd minute when Michael Olise scored his 12th goal of the campaign with a sublime free kick. The hosts came out firing in the second half and almost equalised through Andrej Kramarić but his shot was blocked. Hoffenheim was made to pay for this miss as Olise turned provider for Joshua Kimmich to double the lead in the 53rd minute. 

Hoffenheim pulled off one of the most memorable wins last season when they came from 2-0 in this fixture to win 4-2 but unfortunately for the home side there was going to be no such heroics this time. Harry Kane hit the goalpost moments later before Gnabry scored with a great left-footed shot from outside the box in the 80th minute. Kane was not to be denied and scored his 26th Bundesliga goal of the season. It was an easy close-range shot into the top corner. The goal condemned Hoffenheim to their second worst finish in the league but ensured that Thomas Muller closed out his Bayern career in style. 

No farewell win for Xavi Alonso 

Bayer Leverkusen entered their last match hoping for a win that would give departing coach Xavi Alonso the perfect farewell. Their opponents Mainz were not going to make it easy as they still had an outside chance of making the top four if they won and other results went their way. Mainz started like a house on fire and found the back of the net in the 16th minute only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for offside. It was to be a frustrating day for the hosts as another goal was also ruled out by VAR, this time for a foul. Mainz was not to be denied again as they eventually took the lead in the 35th minute through Paul Nebel. Leverkusen came out firing in the second half and equalised in the 49th minute through a Patrik Schick penalty. Five minutes later the striker scored his second to give the visitors the lead. They could only hold onto the lead for four minutes before Mainz made it 2-2 from the penalty spot. The home side thought they had won the match in the 93rd minute only for another goal to be disallowed by VAR. Both teams had to settle for a share of the points as Alonso bid farewell to Leverkusen. 

Dortmund clinch Champions League spot

In one of the remarkable finishes seen by any team in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund won seven of their last eight matches to clinch their Champions League spot. With eight games to go, they were languishing in 11th spot and had no realistic hope of finishing in the top eight let alone the top four. Mainz will be kicking themselves as a horror end of the season run saw them claim just eight points from their last seven matches after being in pole position to finish in the top four.  Eintracht Frankfurt clinched their Champions League spot with a win over Freiburg with the latter qualifying for the Europa League.The big casualty in the race for European spots was RB leipzig who lost on the final day to finish in a lowly 7th spot which means they failed to even make the Conference League. 

Heidenheim fail in bid to avoid relegation playoff

Heidenheim had an outside chance of avoiding the relegation playoff match but they needed to win against Werder Bremen and hope that Bayern Munich inflicted a big defeat on Hoffenheim. The champions did their part but Heidenheim couldn’t hold their end of the deal as they were thrashed 4-1 at home which means they will now play in the relegation/promotion playoff. Relegated sides Holstein Kiel and Bochum closed off their disappointing season with a loss and a win. The win was not enough for Bochum to avoid the last spot on the table.

Race for the Golden Boot 

Harry Kane was on the scoresheet again for his 26th goal of the season which saw him win the Golden Boot for the second consecutive season. He finished five goals ahead of Serhou Guirassy and Patrik Schick. The latter scored a brace on the final day to make sure he finished in joint second spot. Michael Olise had a great first season with Bayern as he scored 12 goals and was top of the assists list with 15. It remains to be seen if anyone can stop Kane from claiming his Golden Boot hattrick next season.
