Betting Predictions
When Euro 2016 winners Iceland visit Wembley for a friendly match and their final warm-up, England’s hopes for Euro 2024 will have one last opportunity to impress Gareth Southgate.
Despite working hard for their victory, the Three Lions defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 on Monday. Meanwhile, their visitors had not played since Ukraine destroyed their hopes of qualifying for the Euros in March.
Head-to-Head
When England and Iceland last met back in November 2020, the Three Lions blazed their way to a 4-0 rout at Wembley while in Nations League competition. Despite their legendary 1-0 victory at the 2016 European Championships, Iceland had lost all of their prior three games versus England. Southgate’s side have tallied 12 goals in their four historic encounters meetings against Iceland. England have scored 20 goals in only their past seven home encounters across all competitions.
Team News
While Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka might have been forced to sit out against Bosnia & Herzegovina earlier in the week, England are confident that the 22-year-old can play some part on Friday night. However, still battling with a recent knock, it appears like Manchester United defender Luke Shaw will not feature at Wembley this weekend.
Coming off the bench and finding the net at St. James’ Park on Monday night, skipper Harry Kane might be offered a full recall and spearhead England’s charge in north London. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Tottenham playmaker James Maddison might be offered a full recall here.
While Genoa talisman Albert Gudmundsson might be extensively linked with a potential blockbuster European switch this summer, the 26-year-old has not been named in Iceland’s squad owing to rumored personal concerns. After making 26 Premier League games last season as Burnley lost their top-flight status, Johann Berg Gudmundsson will earn his 92nd international cap here.
Probable Line-Up
England XI:
Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Alexander-Arnold, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane
Iceland XI:
Valdimarsson; Sampsted, Ingason, Gretarsson, Thorarinsson; Thorsteinsson, Gudmundsson, Traustason, Haraldsson; Gudjohnsen, Oskarsson
Verdict
Tip: England to Win❌
Reason
The manner of England’s first-half effort against Bosnia undoubtedly left something to be desired, but with a plethora of big-hitters poised to return, the Three Lions should be back to their best – or close enough – at Wembley. A number of young Icelandic talents may be making headlines in Europe, but with no Gudmundsson and no Finnbogason leading the charge, keeping the scoreline decent should be their main goal.

Tip: Over 2.5 Goals❌
Reason
England’s record versus Iceland is also very solid, with the Tree Lions recording victory in each of the last four games between the two sides. Just one of those encounters concluded with less than two goals. While Iceland have little chance of winning, I predict them to score at least once, as ‘Our Boys’ found the back of the net at least once in nine of their last ten games.
