07/09: Daily Football Predictions: Ireland vs England (Nations League)

Betting Predictions

England begin their UEFA Nations League B campaign when they take on Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

When England’s Lee Carsley meet the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday night, two new managerial eras will begin at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

In League B Group 2, which pits Finland and Greece against one other for promotion to the top division of the European competition, the two close neighbors square off

Head-to-Head

The last time the two sides played one another in a friendly match was in November 2020 at Wembley, where England prevailed 3-0. It’s important to remember, though, that this was the Three Lions’ first victory in eight efforts at this match; the previous six games had ended in draws.

Ireland’s performance leading up to the Nations League opener isn’t very impressive. They had only triumphed once in their previous six games, against Hungary 2-1 in June. They have suffered defeats against the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Portugal in those six games, with the latter losing 3-0 in their most recent encounter.

England performed poorly once more in the Euros, losing 2-1 to Spain in a match that the Spanish deserved to win despite stammering through the competition to get to the Final.

Team News

Putting his trust in some of his former Under-21 stars, England manager Carsley has four uncapped players in his squad: Morgan Gibbs-White, Noni Madueke, Angel Gomes, and Tino Livramento. The former has benefited from Ben White’s personal snub, Kyle Walker’s snub, and Kieran Trippier’s retirement from international play.

The absence of Phil Foden and Palmer has increased the chances of a debut start for Gibbs-White and Gomes. Ollie Watkins has also withdrawn due to a personal fitness concern, joining Jude Bellingham, Ivan Toney, Luke Shaw, and Aaron Ramsdale as the players who will be watching from home. There is hope for Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool’s prospects of starting this one as Carsley has stated that he sees the player as a right-back rather than a midfielder.

Regarding Hallgrimsson’s inaugural Ireland team, the 57-year-old has included two players—attacker Kasey McAteer of Leicester City and goalkeeper Max O’Leary—who are both vying for their first senior caps. However, O’Leary will undoubtedly be Caoimhin Kelleher’s backup.

Nine players, including defensive mainstays Shane Duffy and Enda Stevens, were left off of the June roster this time around. However, captain Seamus Coleman, 35, is still going strong and will earn cap number 73 on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Brighton striker Evan Ferguson will be fighting for a central position among players like Callum Robinson, Adam Idah, and Troy Parrott as he tries to put six months of injury misery behind him. However, Hallgrimsson’s system might have room for two number nines.

Probable Line-Up

Republic of Ireland XI:

Kelleher; Coleman, O’Shea, Collins, Brady; Ogbene, Browne, Smallbone, O’Dowda; Ferguson, Idah

England XI:

Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Colwill; Rice, Mainoo; Saka, Eze, Gordon; Kane

Verdict

Tip England to Winâś…

Reason

Although the Boys in Green have been playing brilliantly for some time, the arrival of a new manager should make things a little harder for England. Nevertheless, the Three Lions will have most of the talent on the field, and the infusion of new life from the management and young players could make for a bright future under Carsley.

Tip: BTTS (YES)❌

Reason

In the last year, England has had difficulty maintaining a spotless record. Only three of the Three Lions’ previous 12 international games have seen them maintain a clean sheet, with BTTS occurring in five of their last six games. These teams have faced off in fiercely contested matches in the past, with Ireland having a great home record. The Irish have won their last four meetings in Dublin, while BTTS has occurred in four of the previous six meetings in Ireland. It’s a close match to predict, with England probably winning Carsley’s opening game. However, considering their track record in Ireland, I’d rather take a chance on both teams to score in Saturday’s Nations League contest.
