10/10: International Football Predictions: Italy vs Belgium overview + 9 more tips

Betting Predictions

Italy, who set the pace in League A Group 2 following a fantastic start in September, will play Belgium in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday in Rome.

While the Azzurri won all the points last month, the Red Devils suffered yet another crushing loss against France, to the dismay of their own captain.

Head-to-Head

Italy has prevailed in five of its last six meetings with Belgium. In fact, of the 24 matches between the two teams, the Azzurri have won 16, with Belgium winning just 4. The remaining 4 have resulted in a draw.

Team News

Daniel Maldini, the son of Azzurri icon Paolo Maldini, and teenage Roma midfielder Niccolo Pisilli are two of the five uncapped players on Luciano Spalletti’s most recent roster. This is part of his ongoing effort to lower Italy’s age profile.

Due to his lack of match fitness, Federico Chiesa is still out, Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta BC are recovering from ACL injuries, while Moise Kean, the star striker for Fiorentina, has withdrawn due to a back issue.

The latter will be replaced by Lorenzo Lucca, who has scored five goals in nine Udinese games this season. Nicolo Barella, a regular in the midfield, is returning after missing last month’s Nations League games due to sinus surgery.

Giacomo Raspadori will probably partner Mateo Retegui up top in Spalletti’s new 3-5-2 system as numerous forwards are out.

When Domenico Tedesco, the manager of Belgium, returns to his own country of Calabria, he will be without a few key players. Tedesco was raised in Germany. Romelu Lukaku, an ex-Roma loanee, will not play at Stadio Olimpico since he decided to take a break from the national team until 2025 in order to completely recover for his new Club, Napoli. Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper, and injured captain Kevin De Bruyne are also out.

Tedesco has selected three players who are based in Italy: Samuel Mbangula, a winger for Juventus, and Charles De Ketelaere of Atalanta, who only made his senior debut in August by scoring in his first Serie A game.

Lois Openda is expected to play up front in Lukaku’s absence, and Leandro Trossard of Arsenal is back in the visiting team after being left out of the lineup for the games in September.

Probable Line-Up

Italy XI:

Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bastoni, Calafiori; Bellanova, Barella, Ricci, Tonali, Dimarco; Raspadori, Retegui

Belgium XI:

Casteels; Castagne, Faes, Debast, Theate; Onana, Tielemans; Lukebakio, Trossard, Doku; Openda

Verdict

Tip Italy to Win❌

Reason

Although a new generation of talent has emerged to replace the ‘golden’ old guard, everything is not well in the Belgian camp. Meanwhile, Italy is starting to re-find their identity following sometime in the wilderness after success at Euro 2020. With new midfield players and a formidable defensive lineup, the Azzurri ought to easily defeat their opponents and complete Group 2 with nine points from nine games.

Tip: Over 2.5 Goalsâś…

Reason

Italy is aiming to perform better in this competition after a very poor European Championship earlier this year, and they are doing a great job thus far, scoring five goals in their first two games, which is the second most of any League A team. Even with players like De Bruyne and Lukaku out, Belgium is still a strong opponent and has more than enough offensive threat to concern the Gli Azzurri and reach the back of the net.
