12/02 Daily Predictions: Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Betting Tips

Chelsea arrives at Selhurst Park on Monday night, excited for their Premier League London derby against Crystal Palace. Chelsea tore up the record book to defeat Aston Villa 3-1 in the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday. Crystal Palace’s misery extended last weekend as they were humiliated 4-1 by longtime rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Roy Hodgson, the manager of Crystal Palace, has recently had to cope with an appalling injury list in addition to disgruntled Eagles supporters. While they have won two of their previous five Premier League games, their recent road losses to rivals Brighton (4-1), and Arsenal (5-0) have further soured the waters at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles’ biggest problem has been goals; they have scored just 26, which is the third-lowest amount in the Premier League, and given up 40 goals. With just two victories in their previous twelve Premier League games—including a stretch of four straight home games without a victory—it is understandable why Palace supporters are not happy.

Chelsea has lost their previous two Premier League games, 4-1 to Liverpool and 4-2 at home to Wolves, so depending on how you look at it, you could also say that Chelsea is in a similar situation. On the other hand, Chelsea won 3-1 over Aston Villa the previous week in the FA Cup, and they advanced to the Carabao Cup Final, where they will take on Liverpool at Wembley at the end of February.

Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Chelsea, has not had an easy season, particularly in the league. Moreover, a recent social media altercation with Thiago Silva’s wife, who appeared to demand his dismissal following her husband’s injury substitution for the Villa game, will not have helped.

Three key first-team players are sidelined due to injury, which puts Crystal Palace in a difficult situation when they meet Chelsea. Although they have been playing well at home the past few games, they have suffered heavy losses away from home. Chelsea’s thrilling FA Cup victory against Aston Villa midweek gave them a tremendous boost, and I believe it will translate into a strong showing for the Blues tonight. Though Chelsea usually prevails, these games are frequently tight.

Before that, against Brentford, Crystal Palace also scored three goals at home. The last game at home was against Sheffield. They will now play a team whose defense is far inferior. In their 11 road games this season, Chelsea gave up 21 goals, or nearly two goals per game on average. This stadium has had at least one goal scored by each team in three of the last four direct matches. We also don’t anticipate a strong defense in this game, so betting on BTTS seems like a wise move.
