With a perfect record in the 2023–24 Champions League, 14-time winners Real Madrid will start their knockout run on Tuesday when they travel to Germany for the first leg of their last-16 match against RB Leipzig. Los Blancos won Group C by crushing the opposition, and Marco Rose’s squad came in second in Group G, trailing only Manchester City, the defending champions.
RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid
Leipzig finished second in Group G of the Champions League group stage this season, behind Man City. They have won four and lost two of their six games this season, with both losses coming against City. They bounced back from those losses with victories over Red Star Belgrade (3–1) and Young Boys (2-1). Leipzig’s most recent league match was a 2-2 draw with Augsburg. The hosts are currently fifth in the Bundesliga standings and are barely hanging on to finish in the top four.
Madrid just defeated Girona 4-0, extending their lead in the La Liga standings to five points. With a victory here, Los Blancos, who have already won the Supercopa de Espana this season, will be hoping to prolong their stay in Europe. They dominated the group stage in the league phase, winning six straight games and scoring 15 goals in their previous five such games. They achieved this by winning all three of their away Champions League games this season. Madrid scored two goals or more in each of those contests, and they may do so on this trip.
Leipzig was only able to draw with Augsburg, who are in the bottom half of the Bundesliga, on Saturday. If they were to repeat that performance, which saw them outshot 11-9 by a team that is 14 points worse off than them, they would undoubtedly be defeated by a very talented Madrid team, led by Vinicius Junior, who scored a goal and provided two assists in the crushing of Girona.
Verdict
In the last ten Champions League home games, both teams have scored, and they have scored three goals in their two group stage meetings against champions Manchester City, demonstrating the attacking talent in their squad. Madrid has won all three of its away group stage games, but both teams have scored in each of those games, with Los Blancos scoring five goals in total on their travels in this competition this season, so betting on a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s team with net-bulging action from both sides looks like a great bet for Tuesday’s matchup in Leipzig.
Jude Bellingham’s injury would not have prevented Real Madrid from being the clear favorites going into this game. Los Blancos didn’t notice his absence, but Leipzig might be a different story. The Germans will be eager to replicate their victory over the Spanish powerhouses at this location from the previous season. However, they frequently score goals in their home games, and this one might be no exception. In their home second-leg match, Madrid is probably going to go all out to score some goals.
