Nigeria takes on Equatorial Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium on Sunday in the opening match of their quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title.
Despite having to make multiple roster changes before their opening game due to injury, the Super Eagles hope to maintain their competitiveness, while the Nzalang Nacional want to maintain their record of consistently qualifying from their group.
Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea
Nigeria will be considered one of the favorites as they attempt to win their fourth African championship. The Super Eagles haven’t won the championship since 2013, and they’ve lost most of the ones after. Following that, Nigeria had its finest run, placing third in 2019 after missing out on the 2015 and 2017 competitions. The erstwhile African powerhouses have undoubtedly fallen from grace as one of the best teams on the continent. With one of the best teams in the competition, they have a chance for redemption here.
For their fourth visit, Equatorial Guinea will be trying to surpass their best showing from 2015. They will be looking to cause an early upset here after shocking the continent by making it to the semifinals back then. Equatorial Guinea stunned Algeria in the group stage of their most recent appearance in the competition, making it to the final eight. Even though Juan Micha’s team is the underdog in this match and the competition, it would be a mistake to underestimate them. Equatorial Guinea had won five of their previous ten games and was undefeated going into this one.
Verdict
But it’s not going to be a thriller. Ghana has only scored more than once in two of their last ten games, while Cape Verde has only managed two goals in the previous tournament and has not scored in any of their four prior matches with Ghana. In their pre-AFCON friendly, Ghana and Namibia ended in a scoreless draw, and they might find it difficult to penetrate a resilient Cape Verdean defense on Sunday.
The Black Stars had defeated Cape Verde in their last three encounters, and going into the competition this year, the West African team ought to win their opening match. Sunday night will be a busy one for the island nation.

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Even if Manchester United’s season has been uneven thus far, most people connected to the team probably agree that they are far from their best. After 20 games this season, they have only managed 31 points, nine points behind the top four. The Red Devils lost their opening league game, 2-1, on the road against Nottingham Forest.
They had only won once in their previous five league games, that victory over Aston Villa 3-2 at this location, and that result represented their third defeat in that run.
On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur had a successful 2023. They only lost once to Brighton and Hove Albion in their final five games of the year, winning four of them. Spurs, like their opponents in this game, defeated Burnley 1-0 at home last weekend to punch their ticket into the FA Cup’s fourth round.
Spurs are only six points behind league leaders Liverpool after 20 league games, having scored 39 points thus far despite having multiple players out at different times this season.
Verdict
Manchester United is currently in a challenging situation due to the absence of multiple important players and their inability to produce a string of noteworthy performances this season. Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs are a tremendously offensive team, but because some of their key defenders are now out with injuries, they have also been vulnerable defensively.
Although it’s difficult to predict what either of these teams will do going forward, given their defensive shortcomings, we believe that this game will feature goals.
