Milan, the 19-time Scudetto winner, will host Rennes in the first leg of the Europa League 1/16 Finals on Thursday evening at Milan’s Stadio San Siro.
AC Milan is coming off a terrible season in which they failed to win any titles. This year’s best chance of winning the trophy is through the Europa League. This given they have already been eliminated from the Coppa Italia and are eight points behind league leaders Inter. They are now third in Serie A, but it appears that they will at least finish in the top four.
In the Champions League, they were very close to progressing to the next round in a very difficult group featuring Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Newcastle, but they were unable to advance to the knockout stage owing to poorer head-to-head statistics against PSG. Despite a few disappointing results this season, the Rossoneri have been playing well recently and are in terrific condition.
Rennes finished fourth in Ligue 1 the previous two seasons, but they did not do as well this season. Still, they have recently been one of France’s greatest teams, winning eight in a row. They advanced to the Coupe de France quarterfinals and moved up the league standings. They are now seventh with 31 points, four points behind the Europeans and seven behind the Champions League berths. Even though Rennes will face one of the stronger clubs in the EL. This game comes at an ideal time for them, since they are in good form.
Verdict
Milan is in terrific form, with seven wins in their past ten games across all competitions. Their attack has been solid all season, but their defense has struggled recently. One of the primary reasons for this is the injuries to a few defensive linemen. AC Milan has allowed two or more goals in four of its past six games across all competitions. Rossoneri has scored more than 2.5 goals in seven of their last eight games.
Rennes is in good form, having won eight games in a row (one after penalties). Their attack has been excellent, scoring 20 goals (2.5 per game). So we’re confident in their ability to score against Milan, who haven’t been outstanding defensively recently.
Given that both clubs are in great form and have had excellent goal-scoring performances, we anticipate the game will be high-scoring, with both teams scoring.
