16/02: Daily Predictions: Lyon vs Nice

Betting Tips

Lyon, still riding the crest of the wave under Pierre Sage, will face Nice at the Groupama Stadium on Friday. Lyon would be looking for their fourth consecutive win in all competitions. Les Gones rallied from behind to defeat Montpellier HSC 2-1 in their most recent meeting, while Les Aiglons were defeated 3-2 by Monaco in the Derby de la Cote d’Azur.

Lyon vs Nice

Lyon has moved up to 13th place in the Ligue 1 table after two consecutive wins. They host Nice on Friday, who are second in the league but 11 points behind PSG. Lyon are still in relegation trouble, with only three points separating them from the drop zone.

The majority of this season has seen them near the relegation zone, but they have improved in recent weeks. League wins have come against Marseille and Montpellier, as well as a French Cup success over Lille. Lyon has won five of their last seven Ligue 1 games, bouncing back from a disastrous start to the season. Three league wins have come from home, all in the last four encounters.

Nice is now second in the rankings, but has little prospect of catching PSG. Their primary goal must be to qualify for the Champions League. They are currently four points ahead of fifth place, indicating that there is still more work to be done. Nice’s weak title prospects have faded in recent weeks, with only one point from their past two Ligue 1 games. Their most recent match saw them lose 3-2 at home to Monaco, despite twice drawing level. Nice has won four of their ten league games away from home while losing three.

Francesco Farioli’s side failed to register in recent away trips to Montpellier, Nantes, Brest, and Rennes, with the latter’s 2-0 home victory providing their first home clean sheet of the season. The Italian coach’s options should be enhanced by the return of Terem Moffi and Jeremie Boga from AFCON duty.

Although they are capable of scoring two if necessary, one goal may be enough for Lyon to collect all three points, since three of their past four home Ligue 1 games have been won with clean sheets.

This season, Lyon has scored 56 goals, which is significantly less than their average of three. Lyon’s defense is awful, ranking second in the league. However, in three of their last five home matches, they have kept a clean sheet, and it appears that segment is improving. Nice has scored only 36 goals in 21 matches, which is significantly less than two goals per game. Nice is especially defensive in away games, and it is now expected that they will not attack much unless given plenty of room. Three out of four prior direct duels ended under 2.5 goals, thus we consider this as the ultimate bet.
