23/02: Daily Predictions: Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz 05

Betting Tips

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen will try to shatter an all-time German football record when they host Mainz 05 at the BayArena on Friday night. While the hosts want to capture their first Bundesliga title this season, the visitors are suffering at the bottom of the standings and hoping to stay in the top division for the 16th straight season.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz 05

Bayer Leverkusen has the wonderful potential to briefly construct an 11-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga standings when they play Mainz on Friday. This encounter at the BayArena will see the hosts start at the top of the standings with 58 points. Mainz currently are 17th in the relegation zone with 15 points.

Leverkusen extended their advantage over Bayern to eight points after the latter lost two games in a row. The hosts have won three straight league games and seven of their past eight. They are the Bundesliga’s second-highest-scoring team, with 57 goals at an average of 2.59 per game.

Mainz are seven points from safety, and the relegation play-off berth is just one point away. The visitors lost 3-0 to Leverkusen in the rematch and have lost 11 of their 22 games this season. They are, however, coming off a 1-0 victory over Augsburg in the previous round, which has given them a glimmer of optimism.

Although they have not won consecutive league matches this season, a 3-2 victory here last season demonstrates that they may achieve a positive outcome here. Such confidence will have to overcome Mainz’s terrible recent road record, as they have yet to win an away Bundesliga match this season.

Verdict

Bayer Leverkusen has the finest defense in the Bundesliga this season. Die Werkself are even better at home, where they have gone unbeaten in their previous four games. Three of those games ended with less than 3.5 goals.

Mainz 05 may be sixteen places below the hosts in the table, but Jan Siewert’s team has performed well defensively in recent weeks. The visitors have conceded one goal or fewer in twelve of their previous thirteen matches across all competitions, and under 3.5 goal bets have won in the same number of games.

Leverkusen’s last home league fixture, a week ago, saw them defeat title rivals Bayern 3-0, their fourth consecutive clean sheet in the Bundesliga at their cherished BayArena.

With Mainz sitting in 17th place in the Bundesliga table with only 15 points, it’s difficult to envisage anything other than a home victory. That is appropriately priced, given that Mainz is winless on the road after 11 games, having failed to score in three of their last six outings.

Leverkusen won convincingly 3-0 in the rematch in September, and with 11 clean sheets in 22 league games this season, another nil-nil victory appears inevitable.
