25/08: Daily Football Predictions: Wolverhampton vs Chelsea (PL)

Betting Predictions

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea look to make their Premier League debuts at Molineux on Sunday, following respective two-goal losses the previous weekend.

Matchweek one saw Gary O’Neil’s team lose 2-0 to Arsenal, while the Blues were defeated 2-0 by Manchester City before making up for it in Europe.

Head-to-Head

Wolves has found this matchup to be very profitable in recent years; O’Neil’s team won both of their top-flight matchups this past season. In fact, in their last eight Premier League encounters, Chelsea has only triumphed once over Wolves. Home form is concerning with four of the last five games being lost.

Chelsea defeated Servette 2-0 at home to get back to winning ways in the Conference League. That put a stop to their losing streak of three friendlies and their Premier League debut.

Team News

Owing to his red card for violent conduct on the last day of the 2023-24 season, Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo will serve the second of a three-game ban on Sunday, allowing Matt Doherty to take up defensive duties again. Long-term absentees Sasa Kalajdzic (knee), Leon Chiwone (ankle), and Enso Gonzalez (knee) are no closer to returning either, and there was slight concern over Rayan Ait-Nouri, who was forced off in the dying embers of the loss to Arsenal but should be fine for Sunday.

Cunha, the hat-trick hero of Stamford Bridge, was only given a brief look in the second half of the match at the Emirates. However, the Brazilian will undoubtedly be called up to the starting lineup for game two, when O’Neil may choose to start without an English player for the second straight game.

Regarding Chelsea, Maresca stated during Servette’s thrashing that PFA Young Player of the Year Cole Palmer had reported experiencing a hamstring strain, but he does not think the problem will prevent Palmer from playing this weekend.

As a result, Captain Reece James might be the lone enforced absence for the Blues (the right-back is both suspended and recovering from a thigh injury). Maresca made nine changes for the Conference League, so anticipate many changes.

Romeo Lavia, who received praise for his performance against Man City, ought to be first in line for a promotion from the reserve, but Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are still unsigned and are searching for new teams before the transfer deadline on August 30.

Maresca has hinted that Pedro Neto might only be able to start on the bench at his old haunt and that Joao Felix’s second club debut will be too soon when the game finally arrives.

Probable Line-Up

Wolves XI:

Sa; Doherty, Mosquera, Toti, Ait-Nouri; Hwang, Lemina, J. Gomes, Sarabia; Cunha, Larsen

Chelsea XI:

Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Fernandez, Lavia; Madueke, Dewsbury-Hall, Nkunku; Jackson

Reason

Chelsea’s performance versus City impressed many, as they challenged the champions throughout the match before ultimately losing 2-0 in front of their own supporters. While Wolves found it difficult to contain Arsenal, they will undoubtedly become better at home. The Blues have demonstrated that they have what it takes to bring some points back to London, so it should be a fairly close game. However, the hosts have a strong record when playing the Blues.

Reason

Wolves should not be taken lightly at home, despite their dismal record of two goals scored and twelve goals allowed in their last four Premier League games. At Molineux, the Wanderers have only failed to score in one of their last six league games. Four of those games saw goals from both teams.

Chelsea has struggled defensively lately in this level; in their last four games, the Blues have failed to maintain a clean sheet. In October of last year, they had their last road clean sheet in the Premier League.
