In arguably the best FA Cup fourth-round matchup of the season, Tottenham Hotspur takes on Manchester City, the reigning winners, this Friday in a tantalizing North London match. After defeating Burnley 1-0, the Lilywhites advanced to face the triple winners, who started their pursuit of back-to-back championships with a 5-0 thrashing of Huddersfield Town in the third round.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City
Following a strong start to the season and a top-ten ranking after ten league games, Tottenham experienced some difficult games in November and December. However, Ange Postecoglou’s club has been playing well and getting back on track lately, so they have established themselves as a team that should at least contend for a Champions League position.
In the last seven games across all categories, Tottenham has only suffered one defeat. They were defeated 2-2 on the road by Manchester United in their previous match. Although the visitors were superior in that match, Postecoglou’s team ultimately only won one point. Although Tottenham has been performing well lately, they will host Manchester City on Friday in a challenging match.
With one game remaining in the Premier League, Manchester City trails Liverpool by five points. The season is far from finished, though, and Pep Guardiola’s squad still wants to take home a championship. Manchester City has won six of their last six games, which is an amazing run. They defeated Newcastle 3-2 on the road in their previous match.
Verdict
Goals are always to be expected when Guardiola is in one dugout and Ange Postecoglou is in the other.
When the two teams met in the Premier League earlier in the season, their teams shared the points in an exciting six-goal match, thus another high-scoring game is to be anticipated.
With the ball hitting the net four or more times in three of the previous four meetings between the teams and with City’s lethal combination of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland expected to play together for the first time in months, taking over 2.5 goals feels like a smart bet in this matchup.
Reintroducing Dejan Kulusevski into the starting lineup is Ange Postecoglou’s way of thanking the Swedish winger for missing the match against Manchester United due to illness. James Madison will soon take a late fitness test as he nears a comeback.
Tottenham are on a run of four consecutive home wins and held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 3-3 draw earlier in the season. It’s interesting to note that City has lost all four of its games this season when traveling. Tottenham, meanwhile, has dropped three of its home games this season.
Given Tottenham’s recent home record against the defending champions, a close victory is anticipated.
