When Preston North End visits Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, eight-time FA Cup winners Chelsea will be looking to avoid losing in the third round for the second time in a row.
This is the first meeting between the two teams since the FA Cup fourth round in January 2010, when the Blues defeated the Lilywhites 2-0 at Deepdale.
Chelsea vs Preston
In the FA Cup, supporters will be daydreaming of a second march to England’s national stadium as Chelsea takes on a second-tier team when Preston visits Stamford Bridge for this third-round match.
The Blues, who have won the FA Cup six times since 2000, were originally seen as the competition’s favorites, but between 2020 and 2022, they lost three straight finals. While at Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino downplayed the importance of England’s premier domestic cup. However, now that he is leading the Blues to the Carabao Cup semifinals, he cannot afford to do so in west London.
While there have certainly been shining moments throughout the Argentine’s stay so far, the Blues’ 2023–24 campaign has been marred by inconsistent play and clumsy finishing.
Due to a dismal run of play, North End has dropped five points out of the play-off spots in the championship table after suffering four straight losses. In losses to Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, Ryan Lowe’s team has drawn straight blanks—hardly the ideal preparation for a matchup with a Premier League powerhouse.
Nevertheless, they will have to defeat Preston, who have dropped four of their previous five games in the second division. Having lost to Tottenham in the fourth round of the previous season, the two-time winners will be hoping to surprise the hosts on Saturday.
Verdict
Despite having a dismal Premier League season, Chelsea has advanced to the EFL Cup semifinals and has been drawn to play Preston in the FA Cup third round. In addition, the Blues have prevailed in three of the previous four league games, so they ought to have too much for their rivals in this one.
Preston made a strong start to the season, but they have since dropped seven of their ten championship games, which has caused them to fall the standings. The visitors appear likely to lose against a top-tier team like North End, given that only the bottom four have a worse goal differential than them.
Preston has only scored 31 goals in 26 league games this year, and four of their previous seven losses have been shutouts. It seems likely that Chelsea will win to nil against a team from the higher tier.
This season, the Blues tend to play in high-scoring games; eight of their previous 11 games across all competitions have seen over 2.5 goals scored, and they are favorites to continue that trend.
