Arsenal and Liverpool will instead compete for a spot in the FA Cup round four at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, putting the Premier League championship chase on hold for a little while. After the Gunners ended 2023 with a well-earned 2-1 setback on the road against Fulham, the dominant Reds increased their advantage at the top of the table with a 4-2 victory against Newcastle United the next day.
Arsenal vs Liverpool
Away from their fight for the Premier League championship, Arsenal and Liverpool square off in the FA Cup third round at the Emirates on Sunday. Desperate for their first league title in twenty years, the Gunners lost to Fulham and West Ham, respectively, over the holiday season, suffering two devastating losses.
Due to the two losses, Mikel Arteta’s team was five points off the top of the Premier League standings at the start of the new year in fourth place. Although Arteta’s team will be hoping that the FA Cup offers some relief, their opening matchup in this year’s competition couldn’t be much tougher.
Even though the Gunners won the competition a record 14 times in 2020, it has only happened once in the previous seven seasons that they advanced past the first round, so there’s a good chance their quest this term could end at the first hurdle.
Liverpool is now atop the Premier League standings, and while they haven’t yet reached their devastating peak, their 4-2 victory over Newcastle on New Year’s Day showed glimpses of it. Jurgen Klopp will be eager to see his team defeat Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday to preserve their quadruple ambition, even though the FA Cup may not be the Reds’ main priority at the moment.
Verdict
It’s hard to predict how much focus these two clubs will have on the FA Cup this year, but like the most recent 1-1 league stalemate at Anfield, this game should be fiercely contested, and the visitors might have the advantage.
Since then, Jurgen Klopp’s team has defeated Burnley and Newcastle, scoring six goals along the way. They can still provide enough up front, even without Mo Salah, who is at the Africa Cup of Nations, to cause problems for an Arsenal defense that is still smarting from two losses.
Nine of Liverpool’s previous 13 away games have seen them score at least twice. Their lone league defeat of the year was against Tottenham, when they were reduced to nine players late in the game and gave up an own goal.
Someone else will have to step up in Salah’s absence, and Darwin Nunez might be allowed to shine. The Uruguayan striker, who scored in the Reds’ previous away game against Burnley, has been playing well lately and seems like a solid pick to score here as well.
In Monday’s 4-2 victory over Newcastle, he had eight shots on goal, five of which found the back of the net, so it might not take him long to get one.
