Middlesbrough and Chelsea will soon return to knockout action on Tuesday, when the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final takes place at Riverside Stadium. This comes after the teams’ divergent outcomes in their FA Cup third-round matches. In a thrilling penalty shootout, the Blues defeated Newcastle United to advance to the last four, and in the quarterfinals, Michael Carrick’s team defeated Port Vale three times without answering.
Middlesbrough vs Chelsea
Middlesbrough lost their FA Cup match on Saturday against Aston Villa. They will also be hosting Chelsea on Tuesday, the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, another formidable force in the Premier League.
On Saturday night, Boro pushed Villa to the limit, but a late goal from Matty Cash forced them to concede a 1-0 loss.
Chelsea is aware that they will be up against a comparable opponent, and if the table is any indication, it should be much closer considering Villa is 14 points ahead of Chelsea. The squad led by Michael Carrick has already eliminated five opponents to go to the final four of the competition they won two decades prior.
Boro have had a rather fortunate draw, with just Huddersfield Town from the Championship losing and only Bradford City, Exeter City, Port Vale, and Huddersfield Town from the Championship making it to the semi-finals—although it’s still no little matter when a Championship team makes it that far. To be fair, though, none of those games took place at home.
In their FA Cup match, Chelsea turned it on in the second half, outscoring Preston North End with four goals. All of their home matches have gotten them to the semifinals, even though they had to defeat AFC Wimbledon, Blackburn Rovers, Brighton, and Newcastle to get there.
Verdict
In their respective leagues, neither team has been playing well lately. Both teams will therefore be eager to secure their spots in the EFL Cup and finish the season with a trophy, at the very least. In the English Premier League’s matchday 20, Chelsea is coming off a victory over Luton Town, while Middlesbrough is coming off a 1-3 loss to Coventry. Thirty matches have been played between the teams in all competitions. With 20 victories, Chelsea dominated their competition with the other team. Middlesbrough’s win total is just five. There have been five draws in the two sides’ meetings. In addition, Chelsea has scored an incredible 46 goals in just 30 games.
Although Middlesbrough deserves praise for their efforts against title-chasing Aston Villa, fatigued legs and new absences will severely hurt the hosts’ chances of winning the first leg against Chelsea, who, under Pochettino have improved their play in the last third of the pitch.
Of course, the visitors won’t be helped by a possible double-figure list of exclusions either, but Pochettino still has a ton of alternatives for substitutions, so we can only see the Blues building a sizable lead prior to the January 23 second leg in West London.
It’s expected that Chelsea will defeat Middlesbrough in this match. Middlesbrough will find it extremely difficult to stop a lineup as talented as Chelsea’s.
