On Tuesday evening, Chelsea will play Newcastle United, the team that lost to them the previous season, in one of three Premier League EFL Cup quarterfinal matches at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues easily defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-0 to secure a spot in the round of eight, where they will face the Magpies, who ruthlessly defeated Manchester United 3-0 to extract retribution.
Chelsea vs Newcastle United
When Chelsea hosts Newcastle United on Tuesday night in the EFL Cup quarterfinals, they will be hoping to win back-to-back games for the first time in nine games.
Following victories over Tottenham and Brighton as well as a draw with Manchester City, some football supporters were inclined to think Chelsea was back at the top. Pochettino is under increasing pressure following back-to-back losses to Manchester United and Everton, but the Blues will be full of confidence going into Tuesday’s match after defeating Sheffield United 2-0 the previous time out.
Newcastle United’s season has been inconsistent as well. After losing their past three league games, Eddie Howe’s team is currently sixth in the standings after being eliminated from Europe last week. The Magpies’ poor road record is their greatest vulnerability. Newcastle has lost four of their last five away games and drawn one, going winless in that stretch.
The Carabao Cup quarterfinals include Chelsea vs. Newcastle, one of the three games on Tuesday. Although neither Eddie Howe nor Mauricio Pochettino have won a championship with their teams yet, Chelsea and Newcastle supporters are hoping for trophies soon, and what better time than this year to deliver them.
Actually, neither Chelsea nor Newcastle are at their best when they play each other; they both won this weekend in the Premier League to stop two-game losing streaks.
Verdict
Form would suggest a home victory because Chelsea has only lost one of their past seven games at Stamford Bridge, while Newcastle has only won one of their last eight away games.
But given that Pochettino never really exhibited much of a hunger for this competition during his time at Tottenham, it might not be as simple as that, and excitement for it is probably higher in the away camp.
It might proceed to the end. At home, Newcastle defeated Chelsea 4-1 at the start of the month. Chelsea’s defense has been plagued by problems lately. In their last seven games in all competitions, Pochettino’s club has only kept one clean sheet, and only two of those games resulted in goals for either team.
Last season, Newcastle’s success was based on a strong defensive foundation; this year, it hasn’t been there. In five of the previous seven meetings, both teams have scored, and the Magpies have only won one of their last nine games in all competitions.
