Tuesday’s opening 2024 match pits West Ham United against Brighton & Hove Albion, two teams who finished 2023 with stunning victories over formidable North London opponents.
On Thursday, the Seagulls defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in an attacking masterclass while the Irons crushed Arsenal’s title hopes with a 2-0 victory over the Gunners.
West Ham United vs Brighton
Ten of West Ham United’s 19 Premier League games this season have been victories. The Irons are attempting to win the Premier League for the fourth time in a row and start this game seven points behind fourth place. They have defeated Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sheffield United all without giving up a goal.
With just one loss in the previous eight games, West Ham has won four of their past five in all competitions. At the London Stadium, home form has occasionally been an issue, but not lately. They have won three of their past four home games. The Hammers defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 in the rematch that took place in August.
Brighton and Hove Albion had a successful 2023 as well, placing sixth in the Premier League the previous year. They have a lot to look forward to in 2024 after making it to the Europa League last sixteen this season. They will move up to sixth in the table if they win their first game of the new year.
2023’s home victory over Tottenham (4–2), which included a 4-0 lead at one point in the second half, was undoubtedly stunning. That was a much-needed league victory following three games without a victory. Brighton has only won three of its nine Premier League away games this season, losing four.
Verdict
Brighton, who defeated Spurs 4-2 at the Amex Stadium to snap a three-match losing streak, finished the year strongly and is only a few points behind the Hammers.
The Seagulls haven’t played well away from home lately, though, having dropped four of their past seven away Premier League games and only managed one point in their last three away games.
With West Ham’s recent stellar home record, taking the three points seems like a decent value, however, a clean sheet is unlikely. Brighton has scored in 24 of their 26 competitive games so far this season, and in four of their previous seven away league games, they have scored exactly once.
In an astounding eighteen of Brighton’s nineteen Premier League games this season. This including the matchup between the two at the Amex back in August, Both Teams to Score has been a wise choice.
In light of this, Roberto De Zerbi’s lanky rearguard would find it difficult to contain a prolific West Ham squad. Who have scored goals in 24 of their first 28 games across all competitions this year.
The offensive-minded Albion, on the other hand, have only failed once in their last 35 Premier League games, and they will be confident in their ability to penetrate a West Ham defense that has conceded at least once in 15 of their 19 games this season.
