When Chelsea hosts Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Friday night, the Premier League will resume. The Blues have picked up just one point after encouraging performances against West Ham United and Liverpool, respectively.
The expectation is now on Mauricio Pochettino and his team to convert performances into victories, especially when they play a freshly promoted team at their West London stadium.
Chelsea vs Luton Town
Under Mauricio Pochettino, CHELSEA is still a work in progress, but it would be a great shock if the new Blues manager didn’t record his first competitive victory when Premier League newcomers Luton Town visit.
It will take time to sort out the mess Pochettino took over this summer, but the board has supported him by paying a British record amount for Moises Caicedo and another £58 million for Romeo Lavia.
With just two goals scored thus far in a draw with Liverpool and a loss at West Ham, it has strengthened Chelsea’s midfield but has also exposed a recurring weakness up front.
The Hatters upset the odds last season by winning promotion from the Championship via the play-offs. They were in the National League less than ten years ago. Almost everyone believes they will lose, and Brighton’s 4-1 thrashing of them on the opening day did little to alter that opinion.
Since Kenilworth Road is still not up to Premier League standards, their first home game in the top division since 1992 had to be postponed, giving Rob Edwards and his team more time to get ready for their trip to Stamford Bridge.
Verdict
Chelsea’s defense is weak. Only one of the Blues’ last six games in all competitions ended without a goal being conceded. Only two of those matches had more than 2.5 goals, although the previous two meetings between the hosts and Luton Town were highly exciting. Both games had over 3.5 goals.
Last season, Luton had the second-best defense in the second division, but their defensive play has been far from ideal recently. In each of their previous three games, they gave up at least two goals. Another justification for selecting the “over 2.5 goals” option is that each of the three games concluded with at least three goals. With Luton Town leaking four at Brighton we should have some action here but you have to go to over 3.5 goals to get decent odds
Anytime goalscorer punters should expect Nicolas Jackson to open his Chelsea account, too. The young striker has been a threat throughout the opening two games, averaging three shots per game and generating 1.14 expected goals. This could be his best chance to get on the scoresheet.
