Since they already secured first place, England U21 should heavily rotate their players.
It’s been a pair of 2-0 wins for Lee Carsley’s men at this summer’s tournament, starting with a victory over Czech Republic thanks to goals from Jacob Ramsey and Emile Smith Rowe. Smith Rowe found himself on the scoresheet again last time out against Israel, netting the second in the 2-0 win after Anthony Gordon had opened the scoring.
Before the commencement of this U21 EURO, Germany U21 was one of the favorites to win the trophy after winning two U21 EUROs in the previous three competitions. With 27 points from ten matches, they easily won Group B during the Qualifiers, where they had a dominant performance.
Unfortunately, they failed to live up to any expectations as they began the EURO U21 with just one point from two games. Germany is currently third, still awaiting their first win of the tournament. Germany opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Israel and then lost 2-1 to Germany, a defeat that could prove vital. Czech Republic only needs a point against Israel in their final game to qualify for the quarter-finals, while Germany has to beat England and hope Czech Republic lose to overtake them — but Germany will also need to at least match Israel’s margin of victory to guarantee Israel don’t qualify instead.
Verdict
Emile Smith Rowe, one of two players with multiple goals in the U21 Euros together with Kastriot Imeri of Switzerland, has scored in both of England’s matches thus far. Since Leroy Lita in 2007, he will attempt to become the first Englishman to score in three straight U21 Euro games.
With first place firmly locked up, England might ease down a bit to preserve some energy for the quarterfinal matchup with the Group A runners-up (Georgia, Belgium, Netherlands, or Portugal). Germany, who has so far scored in both of their games, must win to keep their hopes alive.
England has won five of their past six games, which is a fantastic run. Additionally, they have scored in each of their last 18 games despite playing some top-notch opposition.
Even though they will undoubtedly play with their backup players, this team is loaded with talented individuals, and despite Germany U21’s defensive struggles against teams weaker than England U21, they can still score against them.
Germany’s first two games weren’t as horrible as the results indicated, in my opinion. They drew 1:1 in their opening match against Israel U21, although they missed two penalty kicks despite having about 80% of the ball. They had the upper hand and deserved at least a point in the second game against Czech Republic U21, but they were unlucky. Now that they have nothing to lose, they will have to attack right away, which might make for an interesting match with opportunities for both teams.
