Manchester City vs Tottenham – 25/04/2021 Carabao Cup Final Predictions

Preview

Manchester City will be looking to clinch the Carabao Cup title for the fourth year running, while Spurs come into this one aiming to end their 13-year wait for silverware.

At the end of a week like no other in football, Manchester City take on Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

As the dust begins to settle on the remarkably rapid rise and fall of the European Super League, two of the clubs that would have been involved go head-to-head in a fixture which at one stage seemed threatened by their potential involvement in the short-lived breakaway attempt.

Tottenham head into Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final against Manchester City with renewed optimism after Ryan Mason won his first game in charge.

Jose Mourinho’s sacking has lifted the mood at the club, despite the failed Super League fiasco, and former-player-turned-coach Mason could cap a remarkable story of winning the club’s first piece of silverware in 13 years.

However, City have not lost a League Cup match since October 2016, looking to win the competition for the fifth time in six years and, remarkably, the fourth season on the trot.

Another interesting note is the fact that around 4000-8000 fans will be allowed to watch the final at Wembley as life in football gradually goes back to normal.

Form Guide: Manchester City

Manchester City quickly bounced back from their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea as they claimed a 2-1 win over Aston Villa last time out.

The result saw their dreams of winning the quadruple come to an end but they remain in the mix for the Champions League, Premier League and League Cup titles.

They will now aim to claim their sixth League Cup win in seven years on Sunday when they lock horns with Tottenham.

They are also the reigning champions and could now make it four title wins in four seasons with a victory against struggling Tottenham.

Form Guide: Tottenham

Following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, Tottenham will come into this tie with high hopes after claiming an impressive win over Southampton on Wednesday.

With newly appointed interim boss Ryan Mason in the dugout, Gareth Bale and Son Heung-Min were on target to help Spurs claim a 2-1 comeback win.

A victory for Tottenham would see them claim their first silverware since 2008. However, they must overcome the daunting task of facing Manchester City, who are unbeaten in the competition since 2016.

How the match could go

Pep Guardiola will consider this game as an opportunity to get revenge on Jose Mourinho after Saturday’s visitors took all three points earlier in the season when they met in a 2-0 win for Tottenham as they pushed Liverpool at the top of the league.

City have not suffered defeat in the league since that trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. 14 games later and Guardiola’s men sit top of the tree with local rivals Manchester United five points behind in second place.

Spurs have not fared well since as their title charge has since derailed and they find themselves down in eighth and four points behind the fourth-placed Liverpool. Victory over West Brom on Sunday may have boosted their confidence but defeat in a 5-4 thriller to Everton during the week will have brought them straight back down to earth.

It remains to be seen if Harry Kane will be fit enough to play or start on Sunday and that alone could be a potential loss for Spurs even before the game starts. With or without Kane on the pitch, City still remain favorites to win this one.

Tip: Manchester City win

Man City have won three of their last six meetings with Tottenham, including a 3-0 win when the two sides last locked horns in February. Guardiola’s men have won four of their last six matches in all competitions, while Tottenham have only two of their last six fixtures. Bet9ja have 1.48 odds, Bet365 have 1.50 and 1xbet have 1.53.

Under 2.5 Goals

We’re expecting the final to be tight and tense throughout, as so many finals prove to be. Under 2.5 goals have been produced in four of the last seven encounters between these two clubs and Man City’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea also produced fewer than 2.5 goals. Bet9ja have 2.00 odds, Bet365 have 2.07 and 1xbet have 2.14.

Double Chance

We’re expecting to see a winner after 90 minutes and the chances of a stalemate are rather low. Five of the last seven matches played between Man City and Tottenham have ended in wins-to-nil and we’re expecting more of the same in Sunday’s final. Man City are the favorites here, having scored exactly two goals in four of their last six matches. However it may be, we’re expecting one side to claim the win in regular time. Bet9ja and Bet365 have 1.20 odds while 1xbet have 1.22.

Anytime Goal-scorer (Manchester City)

Phil Foden

Phil Foden is enjoying a wonderful season and again popped up with a vital goal in midweek as City beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Birmingham. He has scored three goals in his last five games and is a top shout to score once again today. He is fast becoming one of the Citizens’ most influential performers, and could be worth backing to get his name on the score-sheet again at Wembley. Bet365 have 2.62 odds for him to score while Bet9ja have 3.50.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has netted three goals in his last three games in all competitions and will be looking to add to his impressive tally against Tottenham. Under manager Pep Guardiola, Sterling has netted six times against Spurs and with Saturday’s visitors looking shaky at the back he could well add to that tally. Bet365 have 2.50 odds while Bet9ja have 3.00.

Anytime Goal-scorer (Tottenham)

Son Heung-Min

As earlier said, it remains to be seen if Harry Kane will be fit enough to play or start. With that in mind, most of the goal-scoring burden will fall on Son. The South Korean has stepped up well on a number of occasions when Harry Kane has been absent. He has also bagged some goals against City in the past and the thoughts of leading Spurs to silverware and cementing a legendary status with the club could motivate him to be at his best. There could be value here, with Bet365 offering 3.40 odds for him to score and Bet9ja putting theirs at 4.25.

Gareth Bale

It will be interesting to see if Gareth Bale can rejuvenate himself after the departure of Mourinho, which always looked to be an uneasy marriage. He’s a big game player and scored against Southampton in midweek. He looked happy in the post-game interview and who knows if he could help inspire a side dear to his heart to a long-waited trophy. Bet365 have 4.50 odds while Bet9ja have 5.00.
