On Tuesday night at Vale Park, Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra will square off in the Northern Section Group B match-up as they begin their quests for EFL Trophy glory.
The hosts, led by Andy Crosby, are coming off a 2-1 victory over Oxford United in the third tier, while the opponents’ latest outing saw them upset MK Dons 3-1 in League Two.
Port Vale vs Crewe
Next week sees the start of the Football League Trophy group stage, and on Tuesday’s match between Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra, both teams will be hoping to get off to a winning start.
Port Vale was anticipated to perform better this season after placing 18th in League One last year, and they have. With 13 points from six games, the Valiants are fourth in the standings and are now only separated from Exeter City in first place by goal differential.
Last year, Crewe Alexandra placed 13th in Football League Two, and this year they are in a similar spot. The Railway men have two wins from their first six games, which puts them in ninth position.
After eliminating Fleetwood earlier this month, Port Vale is on track to go to the third round of this competition for the first time since 2009. Following their 1-0 victory over Carlisle on Saturday, the Valiants are currently undefeated in five games and are currently ranked sixth in League One.
Crewe Alexandra lost 1-0 against Bradford on Saturday, dropping them to 14th place in League Two.
Although Lee Bell’s team defeated Sunderland in the first round, winning on penalties at the Stadium of Light, they still face a challenge at Vale Park.
Verdict
Although Port Vale’s season began with a humbling loss to Barnsley, they are a different team now. In their current seven games in all competitions, the hosts are unbeaten, and five of those games were victories. Additionally, they have a stellar record versus the guests (three victories in the previous four matches).
This season, the visitors’ poor road performance has been one of their main vulnerabilities. This season, none of the four road games have resulted in victories. In their last two road meetings against Port Vale, Lee Bell’s men’s team also came up empty-handed.
At the weekend, Crewe Alexandra took a little while to get going, but once they did, the Railwaymen were unstoppable and wouldn’t worry if they fall behind by one goal at Vale Park.
Although the League Two team has previously been stifled in this match this season, it is still expected that Crosby’s in-form team will continue their winning ways with a convincing victory in the first game.
