At Oriel Park, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers square off in what is predicted to be one of the night’s most intriguing matches. The Lilywhites have been playing well lately, winning three of their previous four league games. However, they will have a difficult task when facing the league’s top team.
The Hoops, upset Derry City on Monday night thanks to Rory Gaffney’s goal to maintain their lead in the rankings. It will be difficult to defeat the hot-handed Lilywhites at Oriel Park.
Dundalk vs Shamrock Rovers
On Friday night, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers will square off, with the visitors hoping to maintain their chances of capturing a second Premier Division championship. The hosts are in first place, ten points ahead of Dundalk, who are now in fourth.
Since capturing their previous league championship in 2019, Dundalk has failed to place in the top two. The Lilywhites had high hopes for a turnaround this season, but their 36 points through 23 games have placed them in the fight for third place.
Shamrock Rovers are going for their fourth straight championship in the Irish Premier Division. The only team to accomplish this in the history of this contest was Bohemians, who won five straight championships from 1999 to 2004. The visitors have been excellent once again this year, losing three fewer games than any other team in this league. However, Friday’s encounter won’t be simple for them.
Dundalk has been rather effective at home this year, accumulating 19 points from their first 11 games. However, they will be facing a Shamrock team that has accrued 22 points from their first 11 away games.
After defeating Derry 1-0 on Monday night, Shamrock will enter the game with a five-game unbeaten streak in the League of Ireland Premier Division. The Hoops have gained 13 points from their previous five games to go up to 46 points in the standings, seven points ahead of Derry in second position after playing 23 games.
Verdict
Dundalk enters this match with a 1-1 tie with St. Patrick’s Athletic, ending their three-game winning streak. However, fighting from behind to secure a point while playing with fewer players may have given the club more confidence. In addition, Stephen O’Donnell’s team has six straight victories at home without a loss. Each of those games saw goals from both teams.
Shamrock Rovers has had the fewest away defeats in the Premier Division thus far. Only one of the last three road games for the Hoops was completed without a goal.
This will be the third encounter between the two teams this season, with Shamrock winning the first two games 6-0 on the whole. The last three meetings between these two teams have all ended in victories for Rovers, while Dundalk has failed to score in any of those contests.
With four victories and a draw in their previous five games, the visitors arrive at Oriel Park in good shape and with a chance to leave with all three points.
